In which case the fairly small fee to replace a battery after 2-3 years ought to be manageable. It's certainly cheaper than buying a new phone.

To quote from Apple: "If your iPhone needs battery replacement and it’s not covered, the service fee is from £79."

Not what I would can a small fee!

A replacement battery for a Samsung Galaxy Note is less than £20 from Samsung or less than half that from a third party supplier.

Forcing consumers to go to an Apple store for a battery change is a rip off.

One thing Apple are very good at is making money. (Another thing they are good at is avoiding taxes.)

I'm not sure if reducing the physical size of a battery makes much of a difference but In my workshop I still have some cordless drills/screwdrivers which we still use on a daily basis and they are well over 10rys old and still going. Lithium batteries aren't as good as its been made out, Nickel metal hydride batteries have consistantly lasted longer in cordless tools.

We have had a few Lithium batteries fail just after the 3yr warranty has expired but never had that with Ni Mh ones and they say progress is a good thing.... I'm one of those people who have fallen out of love with Apple in the last few years..:)

Who is forcing them? I did my own on my iPhone 4 and 5, and there's plenty of 3rd party places who will do it cheaply too. Once the handset is out of warranty, why get Apple to do the work?

Oh yes, for the same reason people are duped into buying Apple in the first place.

Just doimg a quick Google search suggests you can get it done for about £35. Or you can buy the battery for about £15. So you are still paying £20 for something you should be able to do yourself.

    Rip off by design.

Quite a few. When I got phones as part of a contract, I was getting a new phone every year or 18 months. This was very wasteful. Since I started buying my own phones outright instead of getting them on a contract, I am making them last longer. To an extent where the battery needs changing.

I also like to carry a spare battery if I am out and about and using my phone a lot.

Used a phone with USB C charging?

    The 1 year warranty?

So instead of carrying round a spare internal battery, you carry around a spare external battery and attach it using a cable? No thanks!

You miss the point. modern batteries have far greater run times and far shorter charging cycles.
My Nexus was 30% in 10 minutes IIRC. No need for overnight charging etc. I charge my phone in the car on my commute.

Plus if you've spent £600 or more on an iPhone, you may be unwilling to let someone of unknown competence from a company you have no experience with to start tinkering with it. Even if it is out of warranty.

Thanks. Didn't realise that was your point. I'm often out and about without any means of recharging my phone.

Those are the occasions when I carry a spare battery.

If I'm using the car, I charge on the go.
