Easier still is to empty kettle before you go to bed. Fill to the brim with brown vinegar and leave in sink ( ldl sell cheap vinengar about 20p a bottle)
The following day pour the vinegar back into the bottles which you can reuse for about 5 times but obviously keep a different one for food! Rinse kettle out and scale will be gone. I generally then boil a kettle about twice with fresh water before using it for drinks. HTH

Another way is to put a bit of squash (robinsons, ribena etc) in and boil. It fizzes violently, but works and is quick

I always use vinegar, make sure you empty it out a few times as the vinegar smell can linger.. xx

My OH uses Bicarbonate of soda. Boils the kettle up and then adds the soda. Puts a little dab around the spout of the kettle too to get rid of the build up of scale there too.
  • Another less smelly way to descale a kettle is to use citric acid (available in homebrew shops) 63p for 250 grams. Use 2 teaspoons to half a cup of water-boil kettle, leave to fizz for 5 mins, reboil and hey presto a clean kettle!!
