For years I've always cleaned the kettle with Value Coke. Just pour enough in to come 3/4 way up boil, leave to cool, boil again, then if you pour the coke into your sink and clean that, it brings the stainless up great too.

Just boil the kettle with palin water twice after to get rid of the taste.

  • Anyone know the answer to this? I don't usually take the lid off my kettle (normally fill from the spout) and it's horrible!!

I live in a very hard water area and when my kettle needs descaling I leave vinegar in it overnight and it's sparkling in the morning. I usually boil water in it a couple times before using it normally again.

I've just found this older thread in the mega index which might help:

Edited to add: and another one: Re: Kettle Limescale Removal

As that one is more recent I'll merge your thread into it shortly. As usual posts are listed in date order so you will have to read from the beginning.

    Yes!!!! shouldnt be a problem
  • Tried this. Every time the kettle boiled the contents bubbled up and spilled out the spout, all over my worktops, floor, you name it! Only boiled a half full kettle too.

Kitchen now smells like a chippy BUT at least I'm hoping for a sparkling kettle tomorrow.

At least I'm laughing! It's the second explosive OS experiment in two days (see my post about multi-surface cleaner).
  • Love this idea Toozie, thanks. I'll try that next time (after my mishap with the vinegar solution!). Coke doesn't fizz out the spout too does it?

Dear Saversarah- DONT boil kettle with viengar in - it will overflow. Fill up to the top with brown vinegar(cheaper) and leave overnight. Pour vinegar back into bottles which you can keep for cleaning and not now for chips! Rinse about 3 times and then boil up an ordinary keetle with water in. I also tried once boiling it- nasty experience.

Believe me- it does work. I usually keep the vinegar for about 5 uses and then discard.
