  • The vinegar trick works for me too :0) Boil it up with vinegar in, let it cool slightly and dispose of scale laden vinegar, repeat but this time leave vinegar in overnight - boil once with vinger in the morning then rinse adn boil a couple of times with water.
Everyone has a dark side... apparently mine is called Harold?!?
  • white vineger , i could believe how well it worked was well impressed lol

  • My sister-in-law empties the kettle and turns it on. As the element heats up the scale just pops off. Haven't been brave enough to try it myself though as I'd probably blow up the kettle!
I must remember that "Money Saving" is not buying heavily discounted items that I do not need. :hello:

I wouldn't do it either. Some kettles have a non-resettable overheat cut out, so you'll need to replace the element if you do this. A few (very old ones mostly) will just go bang, and then you'll need a new element also. You'll probably be deaf for the next few hours too, if it's anything like the time I did it. Others like my kettle have a spring loaded overheat feature and fire the cable out to cut the power, and thankfully they can be reset by pushing the plug back in to the kettle, but I suspect it's not great for them to keep doing this.

Descaling kettles or limescale in general is mainly by dissolving it with acid e.g. Vinegar works to degree, but contains dilute acetic acid and often taints kettle (flavourings added). Tablets work but often expensive and small. You can get powdered versions in bulk now, and use it constantly - for pennies too. NOTE - vinegar works but loses acidity fast. Dissolved limescale is calcium carbonate, alkaline, and neutralises acids. One answer is add product, discard it after bit (neutralised), then add fresh product - descaling starts up again.. Not cheap if need few tablets tablets, but powdered version's are cheap and makes it worth it..

Good grief - two newbies both excited about kettle descaling... do you also have any tips of how to make spam more enjoyable?
