Vinegar, probably already in your cupboard.

Just put a little in with the water, boil the kettle and leave it a while. You soon learn nhow much vinegar you need for your kettle, and the amount of limescale in it

You can boil the water several times, so if it doesn't all come off at first just bring the kettle to the boil again.

I use vinegar too (whichever is the cheapest) and I leave it overnight after boiling it, then rinse it really well the next day and boil some clean water before using it to get rid of all the vinegar.

Up until recently I lived in London where the water is very hard and the inside of my kettle looked like a coral reef but the vinegar shifted every last bit of it.

Doesn't need to be white - malt will do just as well and is cheaper :D

I know the last post in here was 2009, but I just had to share with you my descaling the kettle story....

My husband, having spent all day yesterday watching me first trying to descale the kettle with Oust (didn't work), listening to me reading out all these posts, coming with me to Tesco to specifically to purchase white vinegar, marvelling with me at the vinegar fizzing in the kettle as it did it's work where I'd popped it into the dry sink in case of overfizzing, I have woken to a wonderfully clean kettle....... but it's a wonderfully clean kettle that's been sat in a pool of water overnight. Hubby did us his usual two glasses of water for bed time before coming to bed and ran the water to cool it straight into the sink bowl rather than removing the kettle first. It's one of those ones where the element is in the base of the kettle too, so I don't much fancy popping it back onto the electric base now.

Where is the *doh* smilie when you need it??

So looks like we'll be getting a new kettle after all that anyway!! :rotfl:
