I'll definitely be giving this a go, we live in a very hard water area. :T0

I just chuck in a bottle of Value vinegar and leave it overnight.0

I used several 5L bottles of White Vinegar (£1.50 each at the local Oriental supermarket) to descale a hot water cylinder. Worked brilliantly.Happy chappy0

Hi castman,
Thanks for the tip. I've added your thread to the main descaling kettles thread. I've always used vinegar but might try lemon juice next time.

im a bit confused!
I live in a soft water area but havent cleaned the kettle for ages (at least 3 years!)
I dont use it very much - live alone and rarely drink tea/coffee but would like to get it cleaned up - looks a bit yucky inside.
Would adding some vinegar, maybe a couple of spoons to maybe half filled and boiling, leaving overninght be enough?
Then rinsing in morning etc? Not keen on turning kettle vinegar flavoured! Would adding bicarb be more helpful? before/after boiling?:j Debt-Free-Wannabe! :jDeclutter/Ebay/Savings0 -
To be honest, I haven't ever had the problem of the kettle being vinegar flavoured, but then I never leave the vinegar in too long. Maybe an hour at most, but do boil the vinegar (neat) in the kettle. But see my warning above (post number 83) - watch it because it boils over very quickly... so turn it off straight away it starts to rise. But that seems to speed up the process of getting rid of the scale.
Once it is clean I boil the kettle with clean water 2 or 3 times and there is no problem with vinegar taste.0 -
My MIL gave us a kettle for our stanley, which is great but it's thick with limescale as I don't think she ever cleaned it. Anyway I've tried putting vinegar in and I'm just having another attempt now but the last time it hardly touched it, so I still have a rim of about 1cm of it around the bottom
Any other cheap tips? I'd rather not have to go and get specil limescale remover if it works the same as vinegar. I do have stardrops, will that help?

I usually use a strong solution of lemon juice, boil the kettle and leave overnight. Warn other kettle users though or their morning coffee may be ruined!0

Thanks, shall give that a try. We're not actually going to use it yet as stanley hasn't been put on for the winter yet but I want to be ready! I'm tempted to go at it with a chisel and hammer if all else failsFluttering about an inch off the ground, I may fly properly one day and soar in the clouds!
