We live in an area of suffolk where the water is soooo hard it is incredible... i have a jug water filter and now we have a kettle that filters..so ours gets double filtered...and still it gets limescale :-0...it is boiling now with vinegar in it... but i only have to do it once in a while now...the kettle wasnt that expensive...about £14.99 for a kenwood at Argos...but its keep buying filters thats the pain...
I have to use Calgon in the washer...but i got some when i was in Germany...2.5 kilo boxes...for a fraction of the cost it would be here.... and i still have 2 boxes...only now im back off to Germany for 3 years - where i wont need it TYPICAL....still at least i will be able to drink water straight from the tap again...luxury :-)

We live in an extremely hard water area. In the end, we bought a Kinetco water softener, and it's been brilliant. I can't recommend them highly enough.

It's quite small, fits under the sink, and has made such a difference. I have to do so much less cleaning than before - there's very little limescale the bathroom, in the kitchen. The sink and taps look great. I use less soap powder, less shampoo, less conditioner.... We decided to use the softened water as drinking water too. It took me a couple of weeks to get used to it, and we changed to ordinary Yorkshire Tea (instead of the hardwater one), and we no longer get limescale in the kettle or the coffee maker.

We have to buy salt for the softener, this costs us about £90 a year, but we've easily saved that much. (And anyone who adds Calgon to their washing machine - what a waste! If you bought a water softener you could fix everything and it would cost you less per year!)

Previously both my husband and I had skin problems, these have all cleared up. My hair looks much healthier too.

I'm not in any way affiliated to a water softener company, it's just that it made a big difference to us. We dithered for about two years, and I heard testimonials from people who had bought one, but I took it all with a pinch of salt (pun intended).

OO thanks for the recommendation i really want one when my kitchen extention is finshed this is soooo what i need i have a secondary tap which we drink from that has its own filter but it run out and we got hte wrong insert even though they told us was the right one grrr but is not worth replacing again till kitchen finished
I would recommend these taps though cost us about £18 for tap and then the inserts you buy every 6 months for about £12

My Lidl does limescale remover for 99p, it's in a bottle the same as Viakal, I haven't tried it yet, just noticed it last week.
