Hi all, I don't often venture here, but I've got a question you might be able to help with, if it's been asked before I'm sorry.

I'm a comfort eater, I have bipolar disorder and get stressed easily, and when I'm stressed I eat. Also, my favourite thing is curling up with a box of chocolates and a book. These contribute to the fact I'm about 5 stone overweight. I want to change habits but don't have any idea what to.

It's got to be cheap and healthy. I tried switching to raisins but ate a lot and they're sweetened. I thought about carrot/cucumber and dips, but I'm not sure what dips are low fat?

I know I should just cut out the extra eating altogether, but for now that's not really possible, I want to switch eating habits first then concentrate on getting down the amount.

    Any tips would be great!

I'm sure it's a sin to put healthy and comfort eating in the same sentance :D . But how about various fruits cut up in a big bowl, a fresh fruit salad. Or you can make dips from low fat yogurt and garlic etc, or a tomato based dip (salsa) is healthy, with vegetable sticks.

    Hi

I'm also a comfort eater and need to lose some weight so i know where you're coming from.

At the moment i'm on a diet and i usually use fruit to replace all the unhealthy snacks i normally eat.

My favourite is frozen grapes, i would actually prefer to eat them instead of chocolate. I am actually eating some now. They are low in fat and frozen take ages to eat, so you don't consume as much as if they weren't frozen.

hummus is good. also fruit cos it's sweet. I find exercise reduces my craving for comfort food altogether.

  • Hi Ames!

Fruit is good - grapes , apples, citrus.

With the colder weather how about a baked spud or mashed potato without butter - warming and filling too.
  • Baked sweet potatoes with a little strong cheese and LOTS of black pepper
Carrots/celery etc with salsa or a low fat creme fraiche with chives
ryvita (I KNOW-I used to think yuck but now love them-but the ones with seeds etc) with low fat Boursin or a touch of tuna pate
Soup soup soup-takes a minute or two to heat up in micro-and 20 mins to make :D
and finally-one of my favourite comfort food-popcorn with salt-yum yum :D

I like popcorn while I am watching a good film, its fairly easy in a big pan and you can add spice or whatever you fancy as long as its not lots of butter or syrup :)

Wow lots of replies already! I was meaning more for snacks than meals, but I like the meal ideas too, I'll add them to the pile I've just printed off to give to OH later!

I have ME so unfortunately I can't exercise.

I'm really liking the idea of frozen grapes, I might even be able to fool myself I'm eating something a bit naughty if it's as cold as ice cream!

How do you make popcorn, do you buy a bag of it or something? I actually prefer it with salt.

I'll have a look at ryvita tonight when we go to asda, I remember I used to like a raisin one they did.

Thanks for all the tips, any more greatly appreciated, I find I get bored easily with food so a few different things will be good.
