I think you miss the other person point. It is not being "eligible" for an upgrade is important. It is being at the end of the contract that is important. Cause once you are at the end of your contract "you are free to leave." So now if they dont offer you a good deal you can ask for your PAC and goto other network. And as they say it is quite expensive to get new business, they will give you some discount in hope to get you to stay. But to pre-empt these ppl who try and get cheaper deals, the networks sometimes allow you to call up early to upgrade / call you up to "offer" an upgrade. But as the other person said in these situations you normally only offer RRP.

About O2 currently they are not offering any good deals

Thats exactly what i meant, yes. Being in position for an upgrade is not anything like being in a position to haggle for a retention deal. That deal isnt worse than your previous deal because its a different phone, its not supposed to compete. Thats just the market price for a very expensive phone.

Out of contract and looking to downgrade to 150 mins pm but want to keep passport if possible.
Not bothered about texts or internet.

Anyone know what`s the best phone they might give away free that would earn a few £££ on ebay. Or would it be better not to have a phone and maybe get the monthly amount lower.

Ideally would want to get down to £10pm for 12 months.

I can't give you any suggestion of what phone you could get, but if you aren't asking for internet of many texts, and only 150 mins then I think £10 is definitely achievable. The only problem is that if its £10, and not with internet then the phone will be pretty naff and so might not be worth much second hand.
Might be worth just getting the lowest price 12 month contract you can get. In that case you should be able to get a VERY cheap deal, because you can argue to the retentions department that it would be more worthwhile you getting a PAYG sim. Spend 30 minutes looking back through some of the many pages of this thread for advice on haggling, and take notes on what deals people have got for deals with no internet.

My contract will run up in a month, i am currently on 200 minutes stc and 250 text for £25. Do you think that i could get 500 minutes and stc free internet and text plus the nokia 5800 for the same price? I really need to increased my minutes since my 3 contract finished 2 months ago and i did not renoved with them.

On an 18 month contract you could get that for £20. Dont pay more than that. Quite a few people got deals like that for £15, but i think it was much less minutes. Have a look back through this thread.
  • Hi, my contract ends this month i phoned upgrade and retentions last month i wanted htc magic but all they could offer me was a 24 month contract which i was not interested in so i left it.
Called them back today they now have offered me
18 months £35p/m 750 mins 250 text unlimited data and landline
    or
24 months £30p/m 600 mins unlimited text data and landline

18 month sounds good but means i have to pay £5 more p/m, but then im getting Htc magic extra 250 mins 150 texts etc. I asked for £30 p/m but they said not enough money in that contract for them. Maybe i'll hang it out till the end of the month and try again any thoughts ppl?

Ah cool. I get your point.

Guess I'll just have to wait a couple of months and probably get an iphone 3gS on 02, that's if I'm going to be paying a similar amount to have N97.

    Cheers for the feedback!

Just been on Voda website to see what upgrade options it gives me. I have my pac code already.

After logging in, on he right hand side of the screen it says what plan I am on now and below that gives me a `suggested` plan I might want to change to (worse than the one I am on for the same money).

The menu on the left of that page gives the options....
    Upgrade phone
    Upgrade plan
    Upgrade phone and plan

If I choose upgrade phone, it then shows me the phones and allows me to select the N97 with a price of £135.01. I can then go through the process of purchasing the phone, I have gone as far as putting in cc details and am at the `Confirm Order` stage.

There is no mention of changing my plan. Just a bit confused as to what I would be purchasing if I completed the order.

My current deal is 250 mins, 100 texts, unlimited internet, STC and passport for £25pm. If I could stay on that and buy the N97 for £135, is that a good deal?

As the plan isn`t mentioned during the process (apart from the `suggested` one on the first page), does that mean I would not be signing up for another 18 months??

I think the thing that everyone needs to remember is that the deal Vodaphone will offer you may well be different to the deal they offer someone else. In my experience, if you've been with them quite a while (eg. a few years) and 'spent' a lot of money with them through contracts etc and calls, and perhaps also have a few phones with them, then they are more likely to give you a better deal than someone who has only been a year with them and doesn't really spend much.

I know in my position I have 6 phones with them that all end at the same time, giving me quite a large bargaining tool, and I go through this retentions dealing issue each time all of the contracts come up. It normally takes them about a week of continuous calls to me with various deals before we finally agree on something.

My last deal from 17 months ago was 6 then top of the range phones, 500 mins, 100 txts, 2 free bluetooth headsets and £200 cash back for £12.50 a month each on 18 months contract. All the phones are for the family so we also set up the friends and family calling plan to get free calls between the phones.

My contracts come up again in a month, so I’m fully expecting a call soon from their retentions department to see what they can offer me this time.
