If you are sending a letter, If you do go the signed for route, don't put your name on the sent by, just put the house number and postcode which is all that is needed to return an item. If I knew what was likely to be in an envelope, I might if I were up to no good just refuse to accept delivery of it.

However you do it, do it calmly and politely, no matter how angry and upset you feel. You have to keep your emotions out of it.

It seems some people are missing the point here, stick to the point. The car is broken. No matter what. So they should fix it. isnt that the case here? Whos actually in the wrong? I bought the car, its gone wrong. so its my responsibility to fix it?
If you are expecting a court to force the seller to do the right thing, then the small claims court isn't the place for you. You need the really big expensive court and a deep pocket for that.

The small claims court deals in money, so if you want to take him to court it is for a sum of money. The sum of money the seller owes you is the cost of having the car repaired. You won't know that cost until you have either got estimates or got the job done.

My suggestion is that you get some quotes for the work and send the seller a letter before action.

I'm also confused. Are you criticising me? If so, Instead of attacking others, why not make a better suggestion?

Amazingly?? I think she is ranting like a loony. She seriously needs to calm down, and put this into perspective.

The advice given here seems to be generally quite sound, even though none of the people dispensing it are claiming to be geniuses. They have explained the relevant issues, given pointers on costs and the best way to correspond with the seller, noting that one should behave calmly and rationally when publishing messages which will be archived on the internet, and highlighting some of the practicalities of small claims court.
You have newborn and are dealing with this amazingly .
I thought the OP said they had a one year old son. Do they have a newborn as well?

Some would observe that the OP has not been dealing with it amazingly.

They have been talking about unreasonable costs, then when picked up on that, saying costs don't matter but principle, using censored language and lots of UPPERCASE and exclamation marks !!!!! and making sure they type out the name of the company they are flaming in capital letters in as many posts as possible. While this approach might appeal to those with sympathetic hearts... to many of us it comes off as a rant.

However in the later posts the OP seems to have calmed down and mellowed and been accepting of the advice. All that remains is for them to obtain quotes for what they would like fixing and send a calm and concise letter by regular first class post, articulating the problem and asking for a suitable remedy.

After giving them chance to respond in writing it can be followed up with a further letter before action and ultimately small claims court, for which a solicitor is not required, unless they want to spend money on a solicitor "on principle" rather than as a matter of necessity, which is unlikely to be reimbursed by the small claims court. Or perhaps the solicitor would recommend big claims court where they could try for recovery of legal costs, but it would be crazy to do that for an £80 alternator plus fitting.

I hope nobody on here has the ''pleasure'' of doing business with the OP.
