I took a loan out with First Plus 5 years ago and took out the insurance premium at the same time. Thought no more of it till I read Martin's newletter, thinking it was the right thing to have done at the time. Settled the loan early, but upon investigating the loan found I had paid £8k for the insurance, added to the loan at the time of taking out.

Followed the process on this site by sending template letter 1. First Plus sent a very long winded reply stating my claim was not valid and they would not be repaying - basically they felt they had keep me fully informed during the whole process.

Sent template letter 2 and then when no reply received sent a complaint (template 3) to the Financial Ombudsmen. Ombudsmen wrote to First Plus and on the 8 week deadline day received an offer of a full refund - £8k plus, as a gesture of goodwill - with no acceptance of liability!

Great result and all in less than 2 months - their gesture of goodwill is good enough for me! Advice is clear - follow the process, and don't be put off by their vigorous denial of liability. Would appear that once the Ombudsmen is involved, the are keen to settle!

Thanks Martin - would never have pursued without your advice.

    Hello, welcome and Congratulations.:beer::T:beer:
    Fantastic result.:T

  • 3 success stories and 2 remaining problems :

1 : Sucesss - HSBC : Over 14K PPI refunded, completely paying off the loan and giving me £1200 to spend !

2 : Success - Lombard : Over 7500 PPI repaid, paying off the outstanding loan

    3 : Success : Direct Line : £1500 PPI refunded.

4 : Still banging my head against the wall with a secured loan from First National (now GE Capital). As they were not FOS members, they are refusing to even consider a reclaim for over £10K. The FLA, as we all know, are useless. I have no idea where to go with this one now.

4 : Co-op. My wife originally reclaimed about £1200 last year, got the usual "no chance" letter and she gave up at this first hurdle. With new evidence, we have now gone back to them but they have said they will not look into it as we did not go to the FOS within 6 months. We wrote to the FOS, who have said the same despite me questioning whether, if a banking organisation can successfuly put you off once, does this mean you can never make another complaint against them ? The FOS have not yet sent through details to the co-op and have said they will if we want them to, but that co-op are within their rights not to have to look into it ! So much for having 6 years to reclaim - it seems that if they successfully put you off once, they need worry no more !

Hi there & Well Done on your success,
I'm just about to put my reclaim in with Direct Line. How did you find dealing with them & did you have to go through FOS? How long did it take from start of your claim to the settlement? Hope you don't mind me asking. Gil8967
  • Hello everyone

i havent posted on here since asked for advice, a little update, its been about 6 months since i started my claim with Barclays, i have heard today from FOS that my case is now being passed to an adjudicaor (how the hell do you even spell that word) but they told me that they are recieving about 720 complaints a week about ppi
hopefully this will be sorted soon as im getting married at the end of the month and moving the end of next month, both cost money. anyone got any idea how long the process will take from here, i know thats a bit of a how longs a piece of string, but as i was taught, shy bairns get nowt.
  • good for you in going to fos...my complaint about ppi with egg has been with them 18months now and has yet to be passed to an adjudicant....

it may be quicker for you..but i doubt it...just hope that the company make an offer prior to it being passed.....

however it is worth it...i have had a settlement for 2x m and s loans...once the adjudicant got involved with these it took about 3-4 months to get an agreement to settle..

good luck and dont give up!!!!

  • First off, I just want to say thanks to Martin & his team for the advice on this site. I've just received a cheque today for almost £3,000 of reclaimed PPI, and all it took was a sample letter provided by this very site.

So, here's my story. Back in 2004, I took out a loan with Egg and somewhat foolishly took out PPI, which basically extended the period of the loan by 12 months. I paid the loan off early, and have since bemoaned the fact that I had paid so much extra for PPI.

And then I saw the info on this site. So I downloaded the letter template, and cited the fact that I had a medical condition that hadn't been checked and would probably have invalidated the policy, and that Egg had also been found guilty of mis-selling PPI in the past, as the reasons for my complaint and request for compensation.

A week after posting the letter I got a reply stating they were looking into my complaint and would try to resolve it within 8 weeks. So I was fully expecting lots of denials and roadblocks ahead. So imagine my surprise today when I got a letter with a cheque attached, in full settlement of my claim. No arguments, no threats of the Financial Ombudsman.

So to anyone who thinks they may be entitled to a refund, I'd simply say this: give it a go!! It takes two minutes to amend the letter template, and a cost of just over £1 to send it by recorded delivery. You'd be crazy not to try it if you genuinely think you have reason to claim!!

  • I have followed the advice on this site and got £850 back from MBNA. They have not admitted any liability but have 'sent the cash as a gesture of goodwill'.

I had only wriiten one letter. It did take a couple of months to get anything back but to their credit they have not resisted.

Got another pending claim with barclaycard to come.
