PPI Reclaiming successes and failures

July 2012 I rang up all the companies I could remember ever having financial dealings with - Mortgages, Cards, Loans etc.
Every single one came back negative with the exception of the Halifax who told me I had PPI as part of a 7 year loan (£10,000) that had literally ended the month before. I rang their PPI line and complained. Heard nothing for 8 weeks, rang back to be told it had been refused and I had been sent a letter weeks before. I asked for a copy of the letter. In the meantime I wrote my own letter listing EVERY finance product I had EVER had including 2 mortgages with them WITHOUT PPI asking the question WHY would I not take PPI out on a large mortgage but choose to do so on a £10,000 loan?. Anyhow, waited a bit longer - still nothing. Then I get a phone call from my local Halifax who had seen a large payment was due to go into my bank (wife sold some shares) and did I want to open a savings account for this money! I told him I was not happy that it had taken over 15 weeks for NO ONE to contact me re PPI yet within a day or two I was called about opening another account! Eventually I sent a tweet to the Halifax (@AskHalifaxBank) about this. Within 30 mins I got a call asking me for more details - more than they ever asked when I initially called them. Anyway less than 2 weeks later a cheque landed for over £4,300!
Although this website didn't directly help I thought I'd post this as encouragement for ANYONE who thinks they can't do it on their own - here's proof that you CAN.0 -
First time poster in this thread, but have been watching and learning from others.
Basically, 8 weeks ago i did some digging, knowing that i'd had 6-7 loans with Natwest starting from 2000-2007 (they were all 'topped-up' or consolidated into the next loan). I had no loan agreements or even loan numbers, but i pursued it anyway, knowing that at least some of these had PPI...
I requested the info from Natwest, they sent me details of the loans and marked those which had a PPI premium attached. (no figures of the actual PPI amounts or anything).
I then called the PPI team and gave my reasons (i was never fully given the details of the PPI and the benefits to me, and had i known these, i would never have taken the policy out, and, i felt it was indicated to me on numerous occasions that i stood a better chance of being accepted should i take out the PPI, as i'm less of a risk). 15 minutes after giving her all the account numbers and reasons, that was teh case opened.
A week later i receive the acknowledgement letter. My stalking of mr postman began
I wasn't sure if i would even get anything back, unsure if my reasons for misselling were valid enough - and even if i was successful, was unsure of how much i would get.
Then, yesterday, 6 weeks and 3 days since my initial complain, a thick letter appeared on the doormat.
I opened, to read that they accept my reasons, and were willing to make an unconditional offer of £5700.
I nearly collapsed!
Then, my amazement continuned as i waded through the thick pile, to only realise there were SIX of these letters in total, of which the combined amount is a simply staggering £15,280!!!!
So happy. You could argue that my sheer financial stupidity caused this in the first place, but, now engaged and living in our lovely new home with no debt (other than our mortgage), this is such a great surprise. We can now pay for our wedding etc. without fear of the cost.
Thanks to everyone for posting on here, it makes great reading and is really helpful for us 'lurkers' on the forum!0 -
Has anyone had any success with Direct Auto Finance/Yes Car Credit? I sent a SAR form and copy of agreement to them. They basically sent a reply denying everything on the form. Now the ombudsman need ME to check who were the underwriters on the 2002 policy as they need that to make the claim????? I thought they were meant to help?0

Hi stevo, the archived info costs £10, they will only come back with "need the account number" , you could try this and see what happens if you want, give as much info as you can regarding yourself and ask for all information that they hold on you and not just a specific transaction, I would send a letter, as the ICO suggests to the data protection manager and see if that helps.
Hi Amersall,
Wrote to Data protection manager and Archive Historic Loans and requested info i have already sent £10 and they have cashed it and reminded them in the letters about this
Thanks

About 2 months ago I sent in a claim to Egg asking for a refund on PPI I paid on a loan which was paid in full around 3 years ago. I had the loan in total for about 5 years.
My claim was based on the fact that during the phone coversation setting up the loan, I was bullied into taking PPI although I continually argued that I do not need or want it. I was basically made to feel that I will not get the loan if I don't say yes, which I eventually did, as I was desperate to get the money. Although this phone call was such a long time ago, I remember it perfectly, purely for the fact that I felt so bullied. In my claim I aruged that I had made it clear to the person on the other end that I didn't want PPI, that it was too expensive, and that I was not at any stage, advised that I could get it somewhere else for cheaper, or that it was even possible to get PPI cover from another provider.
The loan I was applying for was a consolidation loan, to cover a remaining balance on a previous Egg loan, Egg credit card and Virgin Money credit card.
Two weeks after sending in the claim form which I downloaded from the MSE website, I received a letter just asking me to confirm my new address as it was different from the one I had when I took out the loan.
About 2 weeks after sending this in to Egg, I received a letter last night advising that my complaint had been upheld and a refund of all the premiums on BOTH LOANS (I didn't even say I was claiming for the old loan as I had no documents!), plus interest plus the 8% will be made to me within 2 weeks of receiving my acceptance form. In total a whopping £7116! This is almost as much as what my consolidation loan was for.
I highly recommend anyone who had a loan or credit card with Egg to apply - and I'm sure there are many others out there who have been bullied to take such expensive PPI against their will and better judgement.
Thank you Martin, your website spurred me into action after all these years, and the money couldn't have arrived at a better time! I am now going to try my luck getting the PPI back from Virgin!0 -
magpielady wrote: »oops little, anyway forgot to say they told me 3 months ago they had all the relevant paperwork they had requested from barclaycard and both of my claims are now waiting to be reviewed,
Have called the FOS again, we were also due our letter on the 16th October, they were very apologetic and said that it must have been missed! They said that it could now take up to 18 months even though they have all the information, we are just waiting for an adjudicator. They couldnt give me any timme scale - Very frustrating!!0 -
I put in a claim to Tesco Bank for two ppi policies and to their great credit they found a third from some years ago and included that even though I had not complained about it, result is an offer of over £11,000 and I am waiting for the cheque now, so well done Tesco!
I also made a second claim for ppi on a Barclaycard ( formerly Egg) and they have offered me a further £11,200 so over £22,000 for a few hours work following Martin's excellent instructions, no claims company needed.0
