PPI Reclaiming successes and failures

  • I originally joined this forum and posted about an un-expected incident late last year.

Halifax wrote to me, totally out of the blue, re-checking a claim I made against PPI on a halifax credit card in early 2007.

I developed a health problem in late 2006, and was put on the sick list from full time employment on or about Jan 16 2007, and this lasted almost 6 months.
At some time during this illness, I tried to claim on said card, but was declined. Can't remember why now.

The re-check by Halifax asked for dates, details of illness, repurcussions etc.
Anyway, long story short, they wrote back and confirmed the refusal as valid, as the card was taken out in Feb 2007, and I had admitted the period of illness started before this, and as such was a "pre-existing" condition, to which they were not liable.

    I countered........

surely, with a "pre-existing" medical condition, that could result in me making a claim, they should NOT have sold me PPI on the card in the first place, and had failed to make the relevant checks, or ask relevant questions.
I therefore claimed mis-selling of the PPI, and made the complaint official.

This obviously caught them out, as some 7 weeks later, I've received a "final" settlement of £1400 which now sits happily in my bank account!!!!!
  • I've had good news today, received a letter from Capital One stating that as per my questionnaire that they received on 16th December, they are refunding me £111.00! Not a lot compared to some, I know, but still it brightened my day! :)

Well my PPI Refund journey begins. As I no longer have the paperwork for my loans which I was mis-sold back in 2002, I have requested the terms and conditions from Barclay's and Barclaycard using the template provided on MSE. The £1 cheques I have added to the letters have yet to be banked by Barclays. So today I phoned them up to ask if they have received my letters which they confirmed. I have yet to put in the complaint until I have received the terms and conditions however by the tone in the ladies voice it appears they are already looking into it.

What are other peoples experiences with Barclays, are the insisting on sending the FO Complaint Form before processing?

Also, I had a Egg card and they have been taken over by Barclay Card. Do I still send the complaint form off to the Egg address on their website or to Barclay Card?

Many Thanks for your help MSE
  • Just have a look at some past posts including my own barclays aint the best at all with helping you with a ppi complain :-( and they usually want you to do a fos doc aswell :-(

Hi,these are small amounts to be interest?,i dont know how to work the interest out i am afraid,i thought they may be interest but if it is,it was not a lot, although you did have small amounts and loan term.

Hang back with the claim until one of our other posters who know how to calculate the interest look at this.

    Hi,

Can someone please have a look at this and let me know what they think? Should I just submit claims to RBS for these loans (although I'm not 100% sure if I had PPI or not) and hope for the best?

Any help & advice would be appreciated,

    Thanks x
  • Just had to say a big thank you to moneysavingexpert! I followed your adviced in mid Dec 2011. I found account details of two loans with PPI and filled out the offical obudsman information form as requested by HSBC and on this website. As you advised, it only cost me the price of a first class stamp and a bit of my time. A week or two later, I received a letter to acknowledge my complaint and with details of 4 loans, I had with PPI. I thought they would not consider the other two. I was advised that I would hear back from them with an update in 6 weeks.
Well this week, six weeks later, I got a letter upholding my complaint and stating a refund of around £7K, which covers all 4 loans! :j

Following success with Lloyds TSB loan PPI repayment, I sent a letter to Tesco literally just before Christmas requesting refund of my credit card PPI payments, which I had stopped in 2009 by telephone. Then forgot about it.

I only wrote one letter from the templates supplied, (thank you) ... tweaked a little ;) and today received a settlement proposal from Tesco. I must say I am well impressed, they have agreed to repay from 2003.

Anyone who thinks they have to pay a "third party" to do this is very much mistaken, all it does cost is ten minutes and a stamp, please do it!

Just one more to go now, Lloyds CC. Awaiting their response. Happy refunding!

  • Hi all,

I am looking for some help. We had two loans with the woolwich, now barclays. We called barclays who gave us two ppi numbers with the dates 24th Aug 2001 and the 23rd Nov 2001. I know these dates are not correct as we did not take out two loans with in 3 months of each other!

I just called them and they said that they are refusing the loan account dated the 24th Aug 2001, reason being... It was before regulation was brought in on the 20th Nov 2001. That is why they are not paying out as he said the ppi could not have been missold as there was no regulation when we had the loan. Has anyone heard of this. He advised me that there would be no point in going to the financial ombudsmun as they would not uphold my complaint as it is pre regulation. Black and white case he said They are still looking at my other loan, as it is 3 days after the regulation was brought in.

I am gutted, they so missold us that ppi on both loans. My husband was self employed and they said they loan was a condition of the loan as he was self employed and the loans were front loaded. ie our loan for 7k they then added 2k ppi so we took out our loan for 9k!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :(
