    Reclaimed: PPI on a Personal Loan
    From: Northern Rock, after help from the Ombudsman
    Reclaimed: £4500! :rotfl:

    I took out a loan with Northern Rock 5 years ago and agreed to take a PPI policy. I needed to top up the loan 3 years ago, but asked for a quote without PPI. Their rep said that they couldn't do this because I had PPi with my original loan and to get the lower interest rate offered to me, I would have to take PPI with them.

    After reading Martin's article, I sent in a copy of the template last August and received a fairly snotty 'no' back from Northern Rock nearly 2 months later. I decided I had nothing to lose and so contacted the Financial Ombudsmen and at the start of December received a new letter from Northern Rock still refuting my claim but agreeing to refund my PPI premiums (plus interest) "as a gesture of goodwill and to avoid protracted correspondence".

    Having heard nothing by mid January, I contacted them several times to be told they had a backlog of paperwork and I would be paid soon. Having still heard nothing, I contacted the ombudsmen again 2 weeks ago and now Northern Rock have given me the loan at the agreed interest rate without PPI and repaid £4500.

    So, if you claim and get nowhere - go to the ombudsmen, especially if they start stalling over your claim.

    Thank you to Martin and the MSE team - you've made me very, very happy! :T

    Congratulations and well done.:T :beer: .

  • Hi there,

    I thought it best to put a post up here after receiving two letters this morning;
    • What were you reclaiming? - Missold Loan PPI
    • Who was the provider? - GE Money, previously First National - but is now Banco Santander iirc
    • How much did you get back? - 5265.72 (from an 8000 loan which had had 5000 and 3000 credit service charges slapped on top of them)
    • Did you get it back after a letter or did you go to the Financial Ombudsman? - I got a response after writing to the Ombudsman
    • And then write your brief reclaim tale? - February 2008 the template reclaim letter was sent to GE Money. March 2008 (8 weeks) later no response. I printed off (i think) a downloable complaints form from the FSA website which was then filled out and sent off to the Ombudsman. April 2008 (a week later) i received a letter from the FSA. April 2008 FSA returned my documents sent stating they had contacted the company and i should expect to hear from them in due course. Early September 2008 a letter of apology was received from the Loan company stating a reimbursement of fees would follow. December 2008 i sent a letter to the company asking what their meaning on the term 'shortly' entailed with a copy of the letter received back in September. February 2009 on a sunny Tuesday morning two separate letters were opened (one containing the Letter stating amount refunded, the other a cheque enclosed).
    I will be honest i am still in total shock at the same time as being over the moon.

    Thank you to Martin and everyone else involved with the site!!!
