PPI Reclaiming successes and failures

Cash4questions wrote: »We have tried to reclaim PPI from 3 companies so far. Firstly Lloyds TSB for my credit card, who have been charging me PPI since I first took it out in 1999! I sent in one of Martin's letters & received a response saying that in their opinion the policy was not mis-sold as the box was ticked on the application form, I didn't fill out the form myself, it was done by the advisor at the bank.
The next letter was sent out to GE Capital for a car loan we had for a car purchased at Carcraft, Newport. GE Capital wrote back saying it was nothing to do with them & we had to take our complaint directly to Carcraft. We will be writing to them this week.
Finally we wrote to Abbey with whom we had had a mortagage from 1999 to 2006. We were 'sold' PPI with it because they said we could not have the mortgage without it. A few years into the mortgage I tried to cancel the PPI but was given the same response. Abbey have looked into our complaint (after writing to them twice) & said they can find no evidence of mis-selling & that the policy was right for our needs. Our complaint wasn't that the insurance wasn't right for us, but that we were told it was compulsory.
So now we are not sure where to go next. Do we proceed & complain to the Financial Ombudsman or drop the whole thing? The feeling is that it is turning into a game of our word against theirs!
Hi there
Lloyds TSB is a standard fob off response, like what I received and many other people here, so if that was your first letter write back to them until they give you the final response/until you have exhausted their complaint procedures.
Tell them you want them to look at this again as you strongly believe it was mis sold and again an explanation to your reasons as fully as you can.
Good luck with Car-craft again the same procedures if not successful first time round.
Regarding your mortgage, I think what you could do here is contact the FOS to see what they have to say on this matter, they may be able to direct you from here:

Let us know on every one of them if you want to and someone maybe able to help if this is required, fingers crossed.;)The one and only "Dizzy Di"0 -

I took out a loan of £5000 in 2006 with Cahoot online, and didn't even know I had PPI until I checked the documents. I sent off the first letter template, stating it must've been mis-sold to me as I didn't even know I had one. I received a prompt reply containing a questionnaire, asking for more details. I sent it back, and got an offer for all the payments I'd made, plus 8% interest, nearly £650 in total! All for the price of one stamp. I'd urge you to have a go - I didn't think I'd get anything back, you don't know until you try.
Thanks so much Martin!0 -

Just been introduced to this site last month from a friend who works for the banking system, she advised me to claim ppi back as she believes i was mis-sold the ppi on 4 loans from the HSBC, in the past i was classed as a revolver borrower. I have copied your draft claim and sent it last month(22/01) got a responce on the 02/02 saying that they were looking into it and they were sorry to hear that i was un-happy with the service. thank-you MSE. fingers crossed.:D how long should it take from their reply? they quoted 4 weeks but could take longer as it my be an independant adjudicator looking at it.0

Had letter before xmas saying may of been mis sold PPI in 2004.. Didnt get round to ringing them until beginging of Jan, was about a 5 minute call and just said I have never had PPI with anyone so no way I would of selected it with Egg card.. Heard nothing, called them monday.. They said still looking into it.. Friday got a cheque for 1800 pounds. Going to request all my statements off them as looking back on bank statements I think that the PPI has been on there since 2001!.0

Have received a reply from the adjudicator re a claim from first plus and they have upheld all of my complaint, and they have asked me to sign a form and return this to them to confirm that I agree, which I have done, they advised that unless First Plus have any more information that is relevant then they have to sign as well, can anyone come back to advise if First plus can still contest this0

No I have had claim with FOS now since about January this year and has not even got to an adjudicator yet.:mad:0

after 4 months ago going through the financial ombudsman I finally got an offer last week from the royal bank of scotland. I had put in a claim for 3 loans I have had over the last 7 years. I was expecting an offer of at least 2k overall but to my suprise I received an offer of nearly 4.5k. 1st £814 2nd £1204 and the 3rd £2404.
I can safely say I am one happy man and my other half is very happy to now we can book the band we wanted for our wedding and its all thanks to the help I received from this website. Thanks very much guys.0
