Abbey Debit Card, Where Is It?

  • Shocked and comforted at the same time to learn so many people are in a similar situation. I've had, I think, most of the experiences above except duplicate cards. I'm abroad at the moment, so can't do anything, have had no access to my money since the beginning of August, and all the complaints and queries have been met with stupid anwers, being cut off, promises which aren't kept etc etc. Just what everyone else has described.
When I got through to the 'team working on card problems' I discovered that a new card (different number, all the problems with activation, which can't be done here, no access to internet and so on) had been sent on the 10th, although no one had informed me about that and I hadn't asked for it. When we got on to confirming the address it turned out the new computer system had failed to put in the right data, so the new card, and very nearly another new one today, had been addressed to just the town and the country, with no name, house number or street. Is this computer problem the root of all the trouble? If so, why don't they make any announcement or get anyone to deal with it? Who is going to get sacked for all this? How am I actually going to access my money?
I phoned the business editor of The Independent this afternoon, and he said he was very interested in the story and was going to pursue it. I just hope this bunch of idiots who run Abbey are not going to go bankrupt before I can get my money out!

Cancelled my card today. Was advised to do that if I was "fed up of waiting". Then they should send out a new card. This is just to tide me over till I can switch everything over to Smile.

I'm determined to look on the bright side about all of this.

    1. I've saved so much that I've made a large overpayment on my mortgage.
    2. Drawing a chunk of money and making it last sure beats Visa debits here and there.
    3. Made me grateful to have money at all when there are so many people in the world who don't.

Abbey gave me a "five working day" prediction for receipt of card a week ago. Obviously no card, no PIN, no nothing today, a clear five traditional bank working days later. Clearly this is no time in relation to some people, but why are they making statements which clearly bear no relation to reality? I'm so glad I decided not to switch my main account to Abbey.

I got the same but still no card. Went to he bank last Saturday to be told I could only take £500 ou. Just been there and now it's £250. I said that's it's my money and your withholding it. She said "What about using the cashponit" I don't know how I stayed so calm.

Another call to Abbey soon to find out where the hell my card is, and I' waitin for new excuses.

    Dam FUMING!

Looking forward to Money Box on Radio 4 doing a story on these cowboys.

I've been with Abbey for 20 years and never a problem. Then within a few weeks I have no access to my online account and now no debit card. Appalling!

I've been in contact with someone at the BBC who's mentioned doing a piece on it for Radio 5 (I think it's Wake Up To Money but that's on very early in the morning).

Having listened to Money Box many times, it's just the kind of thing they investigate.

Money Box will be back on air in early September according to the BBC website.

Well I had the acknowledgment from Abbey for my complaint about lack of a debit card. They seem to have run out of complaints procedure leaflets for some reason, as they had to send me a photocopy.

Although it'll be old news by September, I am sure Abbey will still not have responded to any of our complaints, so maybe Money Box may still be interested? They must do a certain amount of coverage of things that happened while they were off air.
