I gathered that.
I hadn't clue what the reference was to though.0 -

YOU, can come to France with me in a few hours, following w/e daytrip to be in Paris last Sunday, and we will together buy copies of CharlieHebdo.
You can shred one for OH's clean bedding when you get back: you are free not to be beholden to this muck from her, just as she is unfortunately free to take you as a life prisoner.

HOW MUCH for a handbag?! Seriously?!
Right. You can get pre loved handbags off Ebay. My gorgeous Mulberry handbag was courtesy of ebay.... and cost me £100 rather than the £1000 it started off in the shops as.
On a serious note, (and as a girl who is turning 30 very soon) she needs to wind in the diva demands...stop being precious. Rein in the debts. Get yourselves sorted.
Remind her of Presence rather than Presents. A walk on the beach. Go up to London together for a day out/museums/fun stuff.
Not expensive handbags....Good luck.:p

Extremely expensive handbags and the like are status symbols. They are bought to declare to all (well, all who know how much they cost), that the owner of the handbag is wealthy enough to afford them. Of course this isn't always the case, as less wealthy people still sometimes covet what the richer people have, and are often happy to get into debt to show off a status they believe they should have.
If you got your wife the bag, she would bring it out with her a few times, her friends might oooh and ahhh over it, and she would enjoy the feelings that come with having an admired bag. Once everyone has seen it though, and it no longer gets attention, it will be relegated to the spare room with the others, and she will set her sights on something else to replace it.
If this is indeed her attitude, then I'd be quite concerned about her debts. The student debt may well be fine, but if she values expensive material items in such a way, then I'd guess her credit cards have been badly hit too. If she earns more than you do and contributes far less to the household or joint savings, then you have already been subsidising her loans. Which is fine if they're being paid off, but if not then she has some lessons that she needs to learn about money.
If you do think her debt is an issue, the DFW board may be of more help. You won't be able to control her spending or change her habits or tastes, because that is something she'll need to figure out for herself. But you may have to ask her for a larger contribution to bills so you aren't leaving yourself short for the future.
Explain that you won't be buying her the bag, and show her what your savings are allocated towards. Your savings are not "spare money", but in theory have been spent already because they are needed, and not for an overpriced bit of cloth!
