Well good news. My line is finally fixed and FTTC Broadband is now available. So is BT via top cashback still the best deal?

    Congratulations - compensation ?

This is interesting! I'm with TalkTalk for phone and broadband, my value line rental runs out early March. My phone hasn't worked for over six months but that doesn't bother me much as I use a mobile phone all the time (0800 etc calls are a bit of a problem!)

I had an hour's chat with what sounded like the Asian sub-continent, hoping to get some explanation of what is wrong. A real struggle to follow him (his accent and I'm a bit deaf!) and I'm not technically up to understanding tech talk about it. It ended by him saying he could arrange an engineer's visit but if the fault was not down to TT, I could be charged £50+. BT of course don't want to know.

I don't know if this helps but when I dial the fixed phone it rings out (within my mobile) and I get the voicemail message, but there is no reaction on the landline phone at all.

I may demand the visit free of charge as a lever, if they want me to renew my contract, as I would be quite happy to go to another provider, though I'd still have my bust phone (the message on it says 'Check Phone Line').

Three, two with phones plugged in. All with the obligatory device* (name escapes me). They all look exactly the same and I'm not able to determine the main socket - lines installed 40 years ago!
Same problem with both phones and they are relatively new - less than three years.

    * microfilters. None on the socket with nothing attached, I don't think it's necessary?

OK so when you call the phone, neither rings?

I would imagine then you have no dial tone and if you pick the phone up while it's 'ringing' nothing happens?

No dial tone when I pick up the landline phone.

I can tap out a number on it and it makes the usual sound - but it doesn't ring out. Nor does it ring out at the destination (my mobile phone). And yet the timer on the screen runs! I have to cut it off though nothing is actually happening! It will be interesting to see if I get charged for it!

When I phone the landline from my mobile, the landline phone stays completely dead. Via my mobile it is ringing as it should, then it goes to Voicemail.
