Exactly PaulK. I signed up about 2 months ago. Live close to exchange and checkers said I should get full 16mb, however, when LLU was installed I could only ever get 8mb. Umpteen phone calls to Sky, call outs from BT Engineers etc resulted in finding out my line is made from aluminium not copper (Cheap BT!!) so max my line could handle is 8mb. Had been tried on ADSL2+ etc but no joy. However, full unthrottled 8mb with unlimited downloads for £10 per month is great!!!! Great service so far (touch wood.)

Dumb question alert.......How do I find out how far I am from the exchange?

My sky broadband is fab, just a bit slow sometimes, but hey its FREE so can't really complain!

Topcashback tracked me £10 cashback on this as we were exhisting sky customers, but still not bad.

• I started a new thread but just noticed this one, so will post again here. It seems the jury is still out on SKY - some people say it is fine others had problems.

Would you care to post you your experiences ;)

Here is the orignal post.

Hello, I am currently in the middle of my decsion on whether to swich to Sky.

I currently am on Tiscali £14.99 a month for 2 Mb speed broadband package. Sky informed me that I could have free broadband with my existing Sky TV package. I therefore decided to switch to Sky. When I phoned to request the MAC code, I was also put through to a sales dept, who tried to persuade me to stay since "we valued loyal customers". He did this with an offer of unlimited broadband for 12 months at speed up to 8 Mb/s. I said I would think about it and was given a reference no 876663. I appreciate that actual speed would be limited to my line capabilities. So far so fair. I did think about it and decided to stick with Tiscali so I phoned to have this activated. Yet when I phoned after activatiing the offerTiscali did not seem to know about this offer, despite me quoting the ref. . He even suggested that my "upgrade" would be to 2 Mb/s (Hardly an upgrade as I am already on thi!s)

It seems Tiscali are making promises they cannot keep.

I am asking Tiscali to clarify what they are actually offering. (It is also a bit annoying that they do not make these offers until you finally threaten to leave.

The order has gone through but I will withdraw it and switch to Sky as originally planned if they cannot follow through with the offer.

2 days after the activiation I am still getting speeds of 1 Mb (Less than the 2 I am supposed to and much less than the supposed upgrade, though they did say it can take up to 72 hours, to be fair.
I am interested to know how other people handled the problems detailed The main thing is I cannot get the details of what Tiscali are actually offering me, only had it verbally.

(I will also need to check how long I have to cancel the order)

In tiscali's favour is that the service is fairly reliable (if sometimes slower than it should be even accounting for line speeds), but does anyone know whether Sky Braodband is reliable. Would I be best sticking to T. after all? (Despite the above annoyances)

THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY REPLIES
• I should add that I am concerned about the people who say SKy is unrelaible. So this makes think that I should stick to Tiscali after all despite the current frustrations with them.

However, if I get a lot of replies to the contrary I may re-consder (some of the replies were a few months ago, so current opinions would be of more value.

BTW I have no problems with their TV service and find their customer services 10x better than Tiscali (though whether it would be good for the BB I dont know.

With Tiscali, it takes an extra 20 mins just to speak to someone!

Sky Broadband Mid Package!!

Very relaiable and would recommend to others!
• We recently had a complete meltdown with BT when moving house, they could not have been more inept, clearly misunderstanding what the 'telecom' in British Telecom actually stands for! The guy in the 'resolutions centre' even said there was nothing he could do and was a bit embaressed - hellooo!?

Still, it forced me to look at alternatives and we have chosen a business service for broadband even though for domestic use from Griffin. It's not the cheapest at £20 + VAT and you get a totally businesslike service and they give you the basic router etc (you have to buy a wireless one if you want, however it isn't one that is only tied in to one provider which the BT ones are, not sure about the rest of the the pick pockets!). So far there has been no outages, and any support quesitons are answered real fast by email or by phone, to a normal rate number, not some 50p per minute wallet shrinker of a tariff. I am still paying for BT line rental, but managed to get 6 months money back for the inconvenience, so we'll see what's on offer re phone lines then. Also, having ordered the line with BT we have a 12 month contract, and there seemed at the time to be no other way to actually get a line into the house. More investigations back here once we get to the 6 month mark.

Sorry to hijack the Sky thread, but wanted to add my bit ;)

I've had Sky Broadband since the 18th Jan and touch wood its been brilliant. I cannot praise Sky enough. I already had Sky TV and Sky Talk. From the time I called to say that I was interested in getting the broadband they were great. I got various letters through the post keeping me informed of what was happening. The final letter I got stated that the broadband would go live on the 18th Jan and it did. My speed has gone from 2mb to 7mb since moving to Sky BB. I can also use my company laptop to VPN into work.

In my experience for £5 a month Sky is great!!!
• Advice needed
We have just activated our sky BB today and all seemed to be fine this afternoon. This evening we could not get logged on for some time, eventually we did so. Is this usual? we are on the 16mgb package. Also, the email address they issue you with, can this be changed? my OH tried to do this and it doesn't seem to want to allow this. Where is he going wrong? he has managed to add other addresses such as mine but it wont let him change his.
Any advice would be appreciated.
I USED TO BE INDECISIVE BUT NOW I'M NOT SO SURE!
