Who's signing up for a "Dry January"?

  • I don't see dry January as just being for those who drink every night.

Some people may not do the challenge but might be shocked by the very idea, which may make them re-evaluate their habits and cut down.

People might consider the idea of trying it for themselves next October or January, when they see friends or colleagues doing the challenge.

Had got used to the routine of a relaxing pre dinner drink whilst cooking and a glass of wine with our meal but have managed first two days alcohol free without climbing up the wall. I think it,s the rituals as much as the alcohol that you can miss. If you can substitute the alcohol with somethng else and keep the ritual it feels less of a penance..
  • Took all my glass recycling to the tip this morning (thanks for stopping that service, local council!). Starting totting up the price of what was going in...not great! Feeling full of beans this morning, got all my errands done.
Doing a roast chicken tonight for which I usually would have grabbed a bottle of wine but just bought veg from the shop on the way home...much cheaper! Just remember I forgot custard for the dessert...dammit!
Not missing it at all (which I wasn't expecting to be by day 3!).
  • OH and I are doing this after getting horribly drunk on NYE and waking up feeling really dreadful. I managed to set myself back from recovering from being ill pretty much all over Xmas.

We have about 20 bottles of wine in the house, but strangely I haven't felt tempted at all. OH commented last night that he really fancied a glass of with with our Indian takeaway but I managed to steer him away.

I have been drinking plain tonic water with a slice of lemon and ice as a substitute, and it actually seems to hit the spot!

Yes i think the slightly bitter taste of tonic water with lemon seems to fulfil a similar but different taste sensation to wine and keeps the taste buds sufficiently fooled for them not to notice that the alcohol is missing:)
  • My alternative drink of choice has turned out to be sparkling mineral water with a dash of lime.

Was after soda water but couldnt see any doing my weekly shop.

Bit of a quandry tomorrow though....doing chicken veronique for dinner which requires wine for the sauce. Now I am on the understanding that the alcohol cooks off during the cooking process so I wont be having an alcoholic drink as such?

That's right. The alcohol burns off as you cook, just leaving the flavour. So you'll be OK :)

I think it was David Sedaris who said that when he went tee-total someone told him that, "The glass is the habit." I always find that so long as I'm drinking something it doesn't matter whether it's boozy or not.

I started this on the 31st Jan so have done 3 days already. Fruit juice with sparkling water is hitting the spot for me,

  • I'd like to join in, but as I only stopped drinking last night I will go through until 3 Feb. Have drunk way too much in the last month, had the kidney area pains last night in bed on one side. Have had a smoking re-lapse over the last ten days, have only 4 left in the pack so will smoke them tonight and get back to reality tomorrow.
