Well done for facing up to it and being brave enough to post it, and recognising that you need to make a change.

You can do this, I am sure of it :)

Polyanna If you have a moment, count up the cost of that lot and resolve perhaps this year to put an equivalent amount saved into an ISA or some other savings. This will give you a double health and financial benefit for 2015

That's a good idea, I think I'll put £7 every week (the cost of a bottle of wine) into my £5K fund :)

Thanks everyone. It just became a habit to grab a bottle on the way home from work and generally just finish it. Weekends might have even more when I didn't have the kids.

I roughly worked out what the wine would have cost, but I also have other spreadsheets where I keep a tally of all my spends, so I could add it up if I wanted to. Scares me to, so haven't, but it's a lot more than what I should be spending on the stuff.

That's an average of 32 units a week (based on the lower alcohol beer, cider etc).

I bet you'll start feeling better really quickly, the joy of waking up every morning feeling refreshed with a clear head and without a dry mouth!

    Good luck and well done.

I think there's evidence that a dry January does result in lower levels of drinking once the month is over.
  • I'm in too. I won't be announcing it to people but really want to see it through.
I need to have a fairly frugal January, need to drop about 5/6lb and get my healthy lifestyle back on track after a rather 'relaxed' couple of months.
2014 was a really dreadful year and I've got a big, difficult life change coming up plus extra challenges at work which I think I'll meet better with a clear head.
I don't drink a huge amount (I never go out) but the glass of wine once LO is in bed has become a bit too regular so hopefully this will kickstart me.
I have a Nutribullet on the way too so will be upping my veg intake that way as well. I can tell I've indulged too much (food as well!). Looking a bit saggy and puffy and skin isn't looking brilliant so hope to see some encouraging physical improvements along the way!

    Good luck everyone!
  • Dry day 1 complete! However, does a brandy laced mince pie topped off with vanilla liqueur cream count? ;D

I'm in. I all but stopped drinking Easter 2012 after having 3 small glasses of wine one evening and spending the entire day the next day throwing up. Over the last few months my consumption has increased and I know it's not good for me so I want it to stop.
I have put on a stone since the summer  so am tackling diet and exercise to get back on track.
Here's to a slimmer me in February :)
