My OH is in hospital in intensive care

I'm glad to hear that your OH is home but I'm shocked that he should be sent home without the proper care organised.
He shouldn't have been sent home before an assessment had been made and the appropriate aids and carers put in place and his own GP made aware of his needs.
It also sounds as if his pain medication isn't right.
Unfortunately, if you're not prepared to push for things to be right, you will be left to get on with everything yourself.0 -

Unfortunately the same happened to us, no care plan or go notified it boils down to them being out of the district, for us dad was. 75 miles away classed as a different country as he was in Wales, we had the same the gp issues at least by taking the letter down and speaking to the gp your get help quicker.
Hopefully the assessment will get tools etc although that is meant to be done before the patient discharged - another issue with being out of area,
You take care and get some rest, take all offers of help up. In a way I wish we had done but hindsight a wonderful thing.
It sounds Daft but ur soon know who true friends are - one friend who we know. For 9yrs we never hear a dickie bird from yet others who we don't know we'll have been amazing esp people on here I had so much support that at times I had a tear xxxxxx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0 -

I agree. Spoke again to OH GP and he is full of apoligies as he was unaware OH had been sent home without the care in place, I rang a few organizations from googling and they were also incredulous that OH had been sent home, they put me through to a few other services and emailed me and it is all going on this morning.
One person I spoke to was so angry they asked for OH hospital, who was in charge of him etc to ring the hospital direct to ask what is going on, what happened to his care etc. He implied that heads would roll, I do not want that, all I wanted was some help especially if OH is going to be up in the night needing help as I can't see how I am going to be able to do it all day and all night.
OH had a terrible night last night and is now asleep, I should try to be too but I am expecting a few call backs from the calls I made and later the GP see if he can tweek OH meds.
GP is coming round this pm now, other people are getting back to me, I feel relieved now that it seems it was just a miscomunication issue and there is help out there for me and for OH.0 -

That is it, that is what the GP said, that there had been a breakdown in communication as OH was out of district, in another hospital not in this county and he had not been faxed the discharge papers to then be able to carry on with OH care once they sent him home, once my eldest took the discharge papers personally up to OH doctor and he saw them so far it is going a lot faster and a lot more help should now be on its way.
Oh I know what you mean, not mentioning anyone but some of the ways people have disappeared off the face of the earth it is like really? After we did x, y, z for you you have gone off radar?0 -
ruthnjasper and elasticmoney thank you for your posts, very helpful, today I seem to have my fight on, thanks to all the encouraging posts and useful pointers I am being pro-active and realising I do not have to do everything with OH there is help out there and I am determined to get him some, thank you all for helping me see that, I knew when he came out he was very ill and needed a lot of help but until you are actually truly in it it is almost like you don't realise how much.0

victory, I think you are wonderful and doing just great. It does sound as if a few heads need to roll (but actually I think this appalling sort of thing happens all the time) but with any luck things will start moving now. Just keep your heels well dug in - it doesn't matter that it's Christmas, and that there are less staff around, your OH needs proper pain relief and a proper care plan in place within the next 48 hours. Just keep repeating that like a broken record!Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0

Ask for none oral pain relief, if he's vomiting you can't know how much he's taking. I preferred to inject after my accident as I'm a vomiter when in pain. Have they given you anti clotting injections if so you will have been shown or your OH will how to inject and dispose safely. Also ask for anti emetics. Try not to give on an empty stomach if possible. I found porridge the easiest to take a mouthful of with pain relief.
Re the bad night. What helped me was not having a duvet on me. It feels like lead not feathers. Try to raise the duvet so it doesn't touch him or heat the room and use a sheet. It makes a huge difference to the sleep you get. As many cushions too as broken ribs are less painful when sitting.
The Red Cross have wheel chairs that you can pick up and may be open today.
Don't struggle alone. What has happened is too common this time of year so get your GP to help - I'm not panicking you, but you have 2 bank holidays and a weekend ahead. It needs organised today.
But great news he's home it must be a relief.0 -

Or ask about patches if you're not happy doing injections.0 -

Good on you. You are strong and you CAN do this.
I hope that this doesn't seem patronising, you are older than me; and wiser by far than I could ever hope to be... but I am proud of you. You are a credit to your family in the best possible way. It'll be all right. xx0 -
Glad to hear that DH has improved enough to come home but make sure you get all the support you need or you will in the next bed suffering from exhaustion. I hope you all have the best Christmas you can in the circumstances and I will be thinking of you and your family x0
