I only know them in passing but she always speaks very highly of them, they just seemed not to understand which makes no sense.

I've never even distinguished between my parents siblings and their spouses! It's extra upsetting because this is only brother in law and she is an only child.

Definitely an auntie by marriage. What unkind relatives she has.

Perhaps they are currently so sleep deprived that they weren't thinking straight? Even if that is the case it was insensitive of them to say anything though. Could it be a cultural issue?

By definition, yes she is an auntie, how rude for them to say not!

How horrible is your friend for wanting to be associated with said child and her only niece if she's an only child.

When I have children I won't stop my friends or brother-in-law calling themselves aunties and uncles - I think it shows love and care towards the child.

  • I had a relative who got married in my late teens, I didnt call her aunt, I only had one uncle and I always called him by his name rather than uncle and then his name (by that age anyway and he was fine with that, preferred it) and it would have felt a bit odd calling her aunt. Every family is different though. I think when a child is born if they have an uncle and they sign a card from uncle if they are married then aunt would obviously go on the card.

Otherwise are you going to say from uncle (and uncles wife). Ridiculous.

Wow, what a strange one this is!!! I agree with the masses here: of course she is an auntie to the baby! :rotfl:

My husband's brother has a STEP daughter, so she isn't even related (by blood) to him, and we call her our niece, and she calls us her aunt and uncle.

Maybe the couple didn't mean to be mean??? :o

It could be that they genuinely didn't realise that your friend is an auntie to their baby buzzybee. But she certainly is. :)

Maybe she could drop them a note, (or get her husband to have a word,) to say that they were confused that they thought your friend is not the child's auntie!!!
  • Yes she is definetly an Aunty. Even if they thought different, why say anything? I feel sorry for the poor girl, she won't know where she stands now. :(

I call my god parents Aunty and Uncle, and neither of them are blood relations.

When I was a I child I had completely unrelated aunties. As far as I could work out, any female friend of my mother was my auntie.
  • To me thats one of the great things you gain by marrying. I'm one of a small family but gained sisters (in law), and neices and nephews as my extended family.
    Back on the trains again!
