Is she an auntie?

One of my friends brother in law's wife recently gave birth to a little girl. My friend was over the moon for her and her husband (her husband's brother). She sent them a congratulations card from herself and her husband and signed it love auntie *her name* and uncle *his name*.
A couple of days later they called to thank for the card but also were confused why she had written auntie when it was only her husband that was an uncle, as she's no blood related.
She was gutted - anyone else experienced this?

She'd definitely be an auntie in my mind, granted - generally in my culture every older friendly person is auntie or uncle but even in a narrow definition to me she'd be an auntie.
What a mean response.Yes Your Dukeiness0 -
She is an aunty:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0

I've always thought of my blood uncles wives as my aunts, I think any relative who you grow up with, whether a blood relative or married in to the family can be considered an aunt or uncle.
I think it was quite rude of the brother in law and his wife to bring it up to be honest, and a bit off for them to even question it.0 -
why would they be so awful about it?
i called my mum & dads friends auntie or uncle and they werent even related to me
but in this case, she is her auntie
cant work out whether they are horrible, stupid or both0 -

There was a huge thread on a similar subject a while ago, people had differing opinions, but either way that's not a very nice thing to do, sounds like there's more to this than just whether she technically should be referred to as an auntie. Not something you'd say to someone you like I think even if that was your view.0

As she is married to the child's uncle, she is an aunt.0
