"Technically" they wouldn't be your uncles. An uncle is either the brother of one of your parents or the husband of one of their sisters.

That doesn't mean your relationship has to change or that you have to stop calling them uncles if you want to - as others have said, people use the terms "aunt" and "uncle" as an honorific for a variety of people who aren't dictionary definition "aunts" and "uncles".

I am aware of that - but they're a bit different to friends that are honorary aunts/uncles. Let's hope I never have to worry about this!

But that will vary from family to family. We were much closer to some of our parents' friends who were 'aunts' and 'uncles' than to some of our dictionary definition aunts and uncles.

Every family is different and call people different names. Yes ok she was not a blood relative but my marriage in my opinion she is an aunty.

The fact is that she went to a lot of effort to sort out a card and would of played a nice part in the babys life ie family dos, xmas time. I don't think she should bother now if they are going to be that picky!!! I haven't read all the threads but what does the "blood related uncle say??

True, I only have 1 couple that are called auntie and uncle but that I'm not related to, and they're my mums "fake" auntie and uncle but we just carried on calling them the same as mum does.

If I have any children I don't think I'd like my friends to be known as auntie/uncle.

Hear this from an old biddy.

The wives or husbands of sisters and/or brothers are known as aunties or uncles.
    !
Your brother's wife is an Aunt to your children. Your sister's husband is an Uncle to your children. My mother's sister's husband was Uncle Jack. My mother's brother's wife was Aunt Edie.

Seems complicated, but whatever relationship you have with person A, then their husband/wife is an Aunt/Uncle.
