I am not disputing that a lot of the problems are caused by this country letting far too many people in but having children hardly helps

Sort immigration out and us having children won't be an issue. It would quite simply be a economic disaster if we all decided not to have children like yourself and your husband have. As for you saying you are not contributing to the problem, unfortunately you are just by existing unless you don't use any public services, roads etc. Do you tell your parents they are selfish for having children I wonder?

I am a guy and I don't want kids. I just don't want the responsibility and extra financial burden that having kids brings. I feel the same way in regards to owning a pet; the cost and responsibility of having them outweighs any positives. I hope that doesn't sound bad, but it's the way I feel. I want to experience the world and different opportunities until I'm old. Once you have a child, all of this will eventually dwindle away and become hard to continue. I don't care about children looking after me; I would much rather live in the now and take each day as it comes.

Oooooh I couldn't live without my animal babies - my 2x cats and dog give me immense pleasure and I will happily spend money on them! But yes each to their own.

At least with pets you still have all your freedoms. If I wanted to go on holiday, my pets would be looked after my friends/family no questions asked. Bit different with a kid

Must admit that question went through my head when I read that rather hate filled rant!

I don't think it was a hate-filled rant. He has his (quite valid!) opinion and he dared to share it. Fair play to him. Too many people on this forum go on the attack far too easily.

Contrary to what some believe we do need children, we have an ageing population with people living longer than ever before. We need hardworking parents to raise hardworking, decent children who will eventually run this country, pay our pensions, look after our sick etc. We do have plenty of money an space but due to immigration we are bursting at the seems, let's start looking after our own and support parents more as it isn't easy raising a child, working etc and i don't feel I am selfish for the choice I made to have 1 child.

Do you not think everyone procreating adds to the bursting at the seams problem? Like someone else said, we have people fighting for jobs and school places, gridlocked roads.

I'm not saying EVERYONE should stop having children - I just think it's an outdated view that everyone SHOULD have children, and people should think twice if they're not sure and think about whether it's just society pressuring them into that way of thinking.

Population or overpopulation is a global issue, it's not just about "us".

We can't help existing Jannine.... this is a pointless comment.

I agree to some extent - immigration needs to be more tightly controlled - the Australians have got it right! But this thread is about choosing not to have children...

    Yes - this!
  • What a load of old pony. Sounds like it's for the best that some of you child-free people don't have any kids. It would be awful to think that you'd brought a baby into your hate-filled, bitter and twisted little world.

I take it you have a child then... stop taking it personally Ronaldo!

Yes, sorting immigration would solve a lot of problems but how likely is it to happen? I would suggest not very likely, certainly not in time to stop this country suffering even more than it is now.

I think you are very rude with your last sentence and just being silly. My parents are in their 80's and when they married there was far less choice of contraception and couples, on the whole, didn't really stop and think or talk about whether they wanted children or not. Also 60 years ago this country wasn't struggling with jobs, housing etc was it?
The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie

Not really a pointless comment as suggested, people who are basing and deciding their lifestyle on how overpopulated this island is could always live elsewhere.

It may be, but the post that prompted janninew's comments specifically referred to the situation in the UK .
Having children in the UK today is the ultimate selfish act
