We don't sit in silence at restaurants but I must say the odd silence wouldn't bother me. I think it's a sign of being comfortable with someone- you don't feel the need to natter just for the sake of it. I'm like this with good friends as well- quite happy to stay quiet until we think of something to talk about. With someone I don't know so well, I'd panic and talk utter drivel just to fill in the gaps!

When my partner and I spot couples in restaurants who don't speak to each other, we say that we hope we don't end up like that. The worst ones are engrossed in their phones.

There should be always something to talk about - future plans, the meal itself, how work is going, family issues, friends and so on.

I am personally stunned that couples go out on a social date and sit in silence.

Sometimes you just want some peace and quiet! Sometimes couples can be talking nonstop, other times they just like a comfortable silence. It does my head in when people just talk any old drivel just to fill the silence.

Just play would you rather? Ie would you rather have a massive hand or a massive foot? Or would you rather be the world’s most intelligent sheep or the world’s most stupid human?

Much more interesting then talking about boring stuff like work, politics, religion, life, etc, etc.

    Oooookay then, :o

I bet you're a blast to be around at parties. If you think talking about work, religion, and life in general is boring, then I can't imagine many people wanting to talk to you.

FWIW, I don't think there's anything wrong with having silences; you can't continually talk, and quite frankly, if someone keeps jabbering on, it gets on my last nerve.

However, I would find going out for a meal with someone, and spending most of the time silent; most extraordinary and weird.

You really think talking about work and religion is interesting?! A number of people on here have already said they dislike having to listen to their other half talk about work and religion is equally as bad.

If I went to a party and everyone was talking about work, religion and their life I would leave without a doubt as it would most definitely being a boring party.

I mean of course there are people who are extremely passionate about religion and their jobs, but to be honest those kind of people are usually very dull, very dull indeed...

I agree, talking about work, religion, politics, etc is usually small talk that people aren't really interested in but use it to fill an awkward silence.

OK then - shall we talk about if you would rather be a twig or a leaf? :rotfl:

I guess I would rather have stimulating conversation about real life things, and you wouldn't.

    Over and out.

I'd find it really depressing if I went to a restaurant with someone and we spent the whole time in silence. Whats the point in even going out? For me eating out is a social thing, if I couldn't be bothered to cook id get a takeaway and eat at home in silence :/

You totally don't get the 'Would you rather' game. That is a terrible question. It should be something like:

Would you rather be one person solely responsible for building a bridge that collapse and kills five people, or be one person in a team of ten responsible for building a bridge that collapses and kills 100 people?

If you have stimulating things to talk about in real life then that is great, but usually most people don't.

People go put for different reasons though.

My DH and I go out for a bit of a date, maybe to celebrate, or because we are a long way from home, or to socialise.

My fil doesn't cook. He and his wife eat out almost every single night because they can afford to and they find no joy in the kitchen. So restaurants ( or other people's homes) are mainly where they eat. Takeaway isn't for them, they also dislike clearing up! :D
