What is appropriate re friend staying?

Confucius said Fish and Visitors stink after three days, and unless the visitors are very close friends or family I think this is a good guideline. I think you need to be upfront with whoever wants to come and stay, and outline your guidelines and ask them if they're Ok with that.
If anybody doesn'tbother to say thank you I'd ensure you were otherwise engaged if they angled cor another invitation. . That is downright bad manners and if they asked I'd be tempted to say. oh I,m surprised you want to come again. I assumed you weren,t happy last time as you didn,t evernbother to say thank you!
