Hence why I said something legal should be drawn up.

If he's 'renting' then you should do it properly because he could claim allsorts if things go wrong and you wouldn't really be able to argue without evidence OP

    But then neither could he.

Playing devil's advocate, how did you reach the £500 figure? Did you sit down with him and run through what everything was going to cost and then split it? Or did someone just pluck a nice round figure out of thin air?

The point is, maybe he doesn't realise how much everything is costing and thinks his £500 is going further than it is. So communication is the key - if you haven't already, sit him down and run through the family finances so he knows what your joint expenditure is and what his £500 is covering. Mortgage/rent is a tricky area to ensure he has no claim on your property, but aside from this, you should be splitting joint costs.

Until this is sorted, I would not be paying for any of the extras. If he asks why there's no takeaways or treats, you can't afford them. What's good for the goose...

This is good advice, we just plucked a figure from the air...probably where its gone all wrong.

When I was with my ex husband we had a separate account for extras - maybe we should do the same but again it comes down to trust and communication...

As my mum used to say to us girls, a single women in her own home & with her own income is a very attractive prospect to many man, not for her looks, charm or ability in bed but purely becuase she has a ready made home.

Stop paying for anything extra or agree a "fun" pot where you both contribute cash to every month to pay for the treats.
I don't respond to stupid so that's why I am ignoring you.

At the moment he wouldn't have any claim on her property as that £500 a month is unlikely to cover all of the costs of him living there when you include paying for his dog's vet bell, the take-aways and the meals/going out.

The OP needs to challenge his behaviour and get rid if he won't be reasonable.

Who cares whether he's got a four grand credit-card bill? That's not the OP's issue if the money wasn't spent or her or joint-purchasing decisions.

I wouldn't have him under my roof. His behaviour is unacceptable and shows a paucity of spirit, if nothing else

I wouldn't stay with anyone who is tight fisted, as he sounds to be.

Forget the mortgage, but he needs to be paying half of everything else, including meals, the dog and nights out.

    Lin :)

Sadly it seems more so the OP is the one tight fisted, as others have pointed out, 500gbp should more than cover energy, council tax, water and some towards the mortgage, either way it is looked at that leaves plenty of sisposable income for takeaways etc.

    But then neither could he.

He could show he's been paying £500 a month and say it was put towards the property.

OP can't prove it wasn't however he can prove he paid it.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

well food bill budget (that's everything including pet food, snacks, drinks, household cleaning supplies) is £600 a month for the two of us ... I dont think im being unreasonable to expect him to pay half towards any extras..
