Are you OPs neighbour? You just seem a little too keen and eager to defend his atrocious behaviour, for someone apparently not connected to all the unhappiness and discord the OP is suffering.
The sad thing is you're serious.

DaveTheMus you are entitled to your opinion and I'm sure most posters accept that.
However, it doesn't necessarily follow that everybody who was involved in the war is a nice or rational person. You don't know his personal experiences of that time so supposition is pointless, he may have been in a clerical position for all you know and not on the front line.
He could also just be a human being with the same nice/nasty/weird traits as evereybody else in the human race.'The only thing that helps me keep my slender grip on reality is the friendship I have with my collection of singing potatoes'

You're showing your level of thinking when you say that we would all be speaking German and wouldn't have a democracy. If that's not linear thinking then I have no idea what is.
Forced to fight in a war = War hero. How linear.
You're not a free-thinker, you're just parroting nonsense you got somewhere else. Probably from a UKIP forum.Hope over Fear. #VoteYes0 -

'Speaking German' is a commonly used figure of speech.
I do believe that had the Nazis won, and conquered Britain, then democracy would have been a thing of the past. That is what Fascist regimes do after all.
Most of the soldiers that fought in the war were forced to, but they fought and died none-the-less, in my eyes every WWII veteran is a hero.

No one here knows whether or not this individual fought in any war. What is certain is that it is completely irrelevant whether he did or not, his behaviour is unacceptable either way.
I find it hilarious that it has actually been suggested that people should overlook their neighbour and his son entering their garden and removing plants on the basis that they are old enough to have possibly fought in a particular war.
"What's all that racket in the garden?"
"Oh it's just crazy Gerald - did you know he's old enough to have possibly been in the army in the Second World War - and his son, they've just popped through the hole in the fence and are cutting down our roses again, I'm going to take him a cup of tea and some hobnobs"
"Chocolate or plain?"
"Chocolate."

Wow what talent to diagnose my character in a couple of lines on a forum, Its a gift!
I know they are looking for Forensic Psychiatrists where the missus works, shall I ask her to put a word in for you? Ooo yes please, I've always wanted to do that!
Personally I am of the view that the only good neighbour is the one that is decomposing on the living room floor so my comment still stands. Do you live in a detached house then? If not, your neighbours had better watch out! :rotfl:
Might be rude but it certainly hits its mark when used appropriately.
I guess we've all got our own way of dealing with things.Unless someone was being extremely nasty to me, then I'd like I wouldn't come out with things such as that.
Also regarding a different post, I really can't believe that that second post has received over thirty thanks. :eek:0 -

Maybe so, but does that mean that they should be excused of any bad behaviour?0 -

What has it got to do with him invading the OP's privacy?
Thankfully I'm not restricted by simple linear avenues of thought. If he lived next door to me I would forgive any 'invasions', solely based on what he and his entire generation sacrificed to ensure that we remained a free and democratic country.
However I do understand this is a serious issue of broken branches and cross words so I don't expect many people to turn the other cheek.
LOL you probably wouldnt say that if you awoke to find him in your living room at 3 am in the morning, or rearranging your garden, how about taking your keys to your car from your house and taking it for spin to the shops, or how about speaking to you like your dirt in your own home or how about walking in you and mrs/mr dave having a bit of hanky panky(but its ok youll forgive him after all any invasions isn't it what you said) why not let him move in and move you out!.
you see it not all about broken branches and cross words in the street, its about living free from prying eyes and free from harassment, free to live in piece and tranquility within your own home and boundary.
you said he fought for our freedoms (if he actually fought), then why is he dictating who can and cant park in the street? why is he dictating to the OP about their garden? why is he intimidating OP by monitoring her through windows? does that sound familiar to a someone in WW2 Germany but on a smaller scale. if he fought for freedom then shouldn't he respect people freedoms and rights?
I could go into our own government but that's for another time and thread of the nature.
this point has been done to the death, IF he has taken part of or fought in the war, then he deserves admiration and respect of that act he did then today, no more so than our boys and gals that have lived and died in the "war on terror", this is why i said be firm but respectful.
this is what others are putting across to you, but you fail to understand.
but there comes a time when respect for a past act can be diminished by current acts.0 -
I think all the advice the OP needs has been posted-keep records, get your own fence (no matter how temp) up asap.
The only thing I would add is to try not to let the old guy get to you. Make him a joke in your own mind. When you see him looking in wave to him and have a little laugh like you don't take him seriously, treat him like a bad tempered petulant child almost act like you are humouring him when he talks to you. It will drive him mad as his sounds like a control freak-hence how his son is with him, TBH he may have told the son he had permission to pull up stuff against the fence.
Regarding the WW2 postings I can't let them lie. Firstly this guy would have only been around 16 or so at the start of the war and it is unclear if he did or did not fight.
Secondly whilst I in no way disrespect ANYONE of ANY generation who goes out and fights for their country if you have an interest in history and look at the facts around most wars they are rarely if ever about freedom and almost always about money and political wrangling.
In 1938 we were an enormous political force and strong empire, had we stayed out of the war its more than likely the germans would have negotiated for peace and highly unlikely they would have invaded us. There would have been movements in Europe with some areas moving into German or Russian hands and in the end things would have been settled and things would have likely ended where we are now or simular. Britain wouldn't have had the huge debts from the war and may well have had a much more prosperous 40 and 50's. Would Poland, who we went to war to save and failed miserably have been better off under Germany than they ended up under Russia-for most ordinary people, probably yes.
The only ones who may have suffered more would be those directly persecuted by the Germans ie. the Jewish and Romany, but tbh during the war it was not widely believed about the resettlements and murders and it certainly wasn't a consideration in any of the allies battle plans. Indirectly of course the end of the war stopped the horrors of the concentration camps and that's certainly something to be glad about and proud of, but the suggestion by people that those in the UK would have ended up "speaking German" is utterly wrong. In fact it is clear Hitler saw the UK as a power to be allied with and fully expected us to stay on the sidelines rather than launching into war.
From a humanitarian and moral POV we did what was right, but long term its doubtful it was the best thing for the UK. Like most things its not black and white, life is shade of grey.

Just a brief note re the really odd thing about war heroes. My father is 82 and was too young to fight in WW2. He is probably not a veteran of that conflict.
OP - I would suggest that you record absolutely everything and let him know you are recording it. You can hope to outlive him, but I know that living under siege is grim and you may need to move. If you think you can tough it out, report everything as well.
