oh yes forgot about this one. many a time as a visitor batteries have been removed, clocks have been put in drawers or wardrobes.....

Whenever we stay at my MIL's we have to sleep in the front room and there is the most annoying grandfather clock that chimes EVERY 15 minutes

We stopped it once but the earhole bashing we got afterwards we have learned to live with it.

I know only stay at hers if it is totally necessary (i'm down to once a year :T)

When I stay at my cousins house, I smother the carriage clock under a pillow!

Apart from the electrical gadgets with a built in clock every clock in my house ticks. :D

I collect antique pocket watches and clocks and all my wrist watches are proper mechanical ones that tick.

I can't believe such a small sound irritates people. Why not simply tune it out? I tuned out the memsahib's moaning for years until it was little more than low intensity background whinging. :o

  • Foibles and idiosyncrasies I have far too many of to bore you with I'm sure, but if there's one thing that fills me with fear and disgust it's those multi-coloured washing up sponges - but only if they're left 'rough' side up on the sink; t'other way round doesn't bother me.

It can be really, really hard to just tune something out.

I mentioned misophonia earlier on the thread and how I don't let it ruin be my social life, but some report small sounds making them feel actually murderous.. I do sometimes feel rather irrationally cross but simply smile swallow it and remember its me not them.

I have a number of coping techniques like playing music while we eat and trying to make sure we have lively dining table conversation so my mind is occupied. Sounds in silence are much harder to deal with. I actually like the sound of clocks.

Gas metres, or things on stand by on the other hand.......:o. (Luckily I sleep really well in strange places and funny night noises rarely bother me)

I'm so glad you mentioned this condition, it explains my DH to a T! It even mentioned 'fabric sensitivities' as a trigger on this website http://www.sensehaven.com/triggers.html, which explains why he can't stand velvet or similarly textured fabrics, to the point that he can't even look if I'm touching something with a long pile! I assume there's no cure, so it's just a case of trying to find suitable coping mechanisms?

It's not a massive problem really, although my friends were a bit worried when I said that he complains about the sound of my breathing at night :rotfl:

When I walk to the nearby shops, I have to come back home the other way to complete the loop. It makes it further but I couldn't come back the same way, it wouldn't be right!

ETA: v interested to read that I'm not the only one over-sensitive to some noises. My OH thinks I'm just weird but I can't stand it, noise is the one things guaranteed to make me ready to kill within seconds.

The sound triggers describe me perfectly!
If someone is eating noisily or making lip smacking sounds, its physically makes me feel sick and I have to leave the room! OH does it to wind me up and I just can't be near it.

I can barely even type this it's so horrible to me.... OH rubs his bare feet along the carpet when he's watching TV. I have to leave the room as it makes me want to heave/punch him. I've tried explaining to him how awful the noise is to me but he thinks as it's not loud it can't be a problem.
