Of course they would think that - unless they are the kind of person who thinks initiating an affair is ok.

Are you saying if you were single you'd approach someone who was obviously married or engaged?!

This has nothing to do with age!

I think this thread has gone far enough off-topic so I'm not going to continue to explain my view of the meaning/significance of rings.

Again, I wish the OP all the best.

I don't wear my wedding ring around the house as I am not that much into jewellery anyway. My OH, on the other hand, wears his 24/7 :T.

Every young person I know who has recently got married has gone down the 'asking the father' route - even the couple who have been together for ten years, (apart from one young man who asked his girlfriend's mother as her father is out of the picture). It's traditional and many people, young or old, like tradition.

    That's lovely to hear!

I would have gone nuts if i found out my OH had asked my dad before me!!!!!! I'm an adult women, I've not lived at home for 20 years, why on earth should anyone ask my dads permission.

Tradition. Quite frankly if you'd not lived at home for 20 years then you aren't the standard young couple so it's a bit different.

At the risk of enraging pollycat again, it's another sexist tradition.

Fathers used to be asked because it was actually their decision not the woman's, because they controlled who their daughters married. Personally, I don't think it's a tradition worth keeping.

  • I don't think it's a matter of 'asking permission these days. All the couples were going to get married anyway and had agreed upon this before the father was consulted. It's just a tradition. The father is not actually expected to say no!

My husband asked my dad, but we'd already decided to get married and would have done so even if he'd not given consent (although I'm glad he approved!).

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

Where do you think the tradition comes from?
