Survived the weekend and it's been a full week since I've put anything in the freezer!

I was having a poke around in there earlier and there are several of those 'meal in a bag' type things - fried rice, risotto, paella.

Today I pulled out 'Smoked Haddock Kedgeree' and the OH is cooking it now for lunch and I'm peeling some hard boiled eggs and making salad to go with (as I type) - smells delicious.

I've got my eye on the 'Seafood Risotto' for tomorrow, then OH might want a break from rice...

I think I'll defrost some mince and make a cottage pie - we've not had one in a while and it'll use up some of the frozen veggies.

So - Plan for out this week.

    Kedgeree
    Risotto
    Mince
    Frozen onions
    Frozen mixed veg
Leftover carrot and swede (to mix with mash for on top)
    Chicken breasts (for lunches)
Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you. Anne Lamott

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

Please consider buying some pet food and giving it to your local food bank collection or animal charity. Animals aren't to blame for the cost of living crisis.

My shopping habits have really changed this month. I put potatoes on my list for today but have decided not to get them. I have two potatoes left which are almost past their best but I've peeled them and they will be ok in the fridge for today and tomorrow. I've enough frozen mash pieces in the freezer for one meal and enough chips for two days I think so I'm going to try to make this all last till the end of the month. I might even be able to make the gluten free bread last till the end too.

All I need to get today is fruit and fresh vegetables to supplement my stores.

I used to shop several times a week, now once or twice is enough. I've only grocery shopped 5 times this month so far.

I didn't stick to just fruit and veg, I also got a yellow stickered gluten free macaroni cheese for £1.40, should have been £3.50  It lasted me for two meals and was very nice with the veg that I bought. In future I will be making my own as I'm never going to be paying £3.50 for it.

I have 3 slices of bread left, enough veg and fruit for the next couple of days and still have the frozen mash and chips.

I'm not listing what is on my list today, and what has been used up - I will post that on Tuesday as a round up of the month and what I've spend on groceries.

Then of course it will be a new month and I have no things with a best before or use by date in January, just the things to bring forward from my current list.

Hoping there is no need to buy any food until February

  • Ok, so it is the current thread :)

Over the past month Ive ordered from approved food and had a few grocery orders. I'm accountable on the Grocery challenge but I just really need ro deplete my stocks. I have way too much food for just my daughter and I, and occasionally eldest daughter/bf.

My daughter is a meat eater and I am a vegan so just there we have seperate food. I have my.own fridge freezer and she has the integrated one which came as par tof the house (rented) and we also have a chest freezer which I am trying roto get rid of, as it just encourages me to buy more. Also, it is old and constantly needs defrosting.

Tonight I have used up leftover takeaway curry from Thursday, one potato and a frozen naan.
Daughter has had three sausages, roasties (bought on shopmium then couldnt find the receipt to claim them back) and one carrot and a few frozen peas.
Ive used up some speckled bananas today on a recipe which didnt work sadly, (but will be ok used with a bit of ice cream or spread on some biscuits as a little desert). I have also unearthed some frozen berries from the depths of the freezer. I will have this with YS alpro yoghurt and some other bits of fruit. Melon is in there, and I have some dated fruit in tins i'll throw in.

Tomorrow's plan is to do reggae reggae chicken and rice. I need to buy an onion for this. I also have no lettuce for daughters sandwiches. This is scarce due to flooding in Spain, so may have t o do.without or buy a different variety. I have took out the chicken for daughter's share

Anyway I have waffled on. I hope.I am doing this right.I will report back tomorrow re lettuce and onion.

Plenty out today, but also plenty in. Made the mistake of going to Mr T at YS'ing time. 4 whole mackerel and 2 whole sea bass for £3.50. Would have been really rude not to.

Also, 6 portions of bolognaise to go in.

But out, 3 x chocolate brownie (for colleagues and I tomorrow. They will be needed), 1 sausage roll. 1 pizza - for DH who arrived home just as I'd eaten all the tuna:D

Made custard as well, but eating that will not be an issue.

Today I made myself a roast dinner (the first I've made since losing DH), using a joint of beef that's been in the freezer for ages, some frozen roast potatoes and 2 yorskire puds. I've got some of the beef left, so I'm going to put it in the slow cooker with some carrots and onions tomorrow.

I took the brave step yesterday of gutting out and listing the contents of my smaller freezer - I'd done the big freezer ages ago. Talk about boldly go.... I'll cetainly not need to buy pitta bread or corn for a long time! A few bits & one UFO ditched but thankfully not to much waste.
This thread is saving me money - three of the items I had on my shopping list for this week it turned out I already had but had forgotten about
Out - Trout pate, lentil soup, broad beans, veggie haggis, teensy piece of shropshire blue, sweet potato chunks, 2 bags of nuts and some beef dripping. The nuts and dripping are to make fat balls for the birds
    In- nothing

    out:
    braised red cabbage
    1 chicken leg
    1 pork loin steak
    2 portions turkey meatloaf
    turkey gravy

    in:
    diced mango for DD's smoothies
2 lamb shanks (once I split the pack of 4 in the fridge)
2 portions kale and bacon soup - wasn't that impressed so I will need to space consumption out!
