On Eat Well for less, they totted up the receipts for a year and it was a fortune for the family concerned. They then showed the family a bundle of receipts which was huge and covered just one week with something like 17 shops.
A quick stop off to the shop last night and I spent £13. I can't even remember what I bought or whether how much of what I bought I actually needed I know I bought steak because I needed extra for tea but then we ended up with leftovers so actually we probably could have made do with what I already had. I think my problem has been I buy and replace the same products rather than taking stock and using up what I have.
Proper meal planning on the cards and if I can face it, tidying my cupboards
I need to save some money. It would be great to have some savings at the end of the year rather than be scrabbling around wondering what I've spent all my money on.0 -

I'm originally from the north and used to love the flavour of steak and cowheel pie. Does anyone still make it? I've asked at the local butchers and get funny looks when I ask for calves heels.
I think that is cow feet in some places and "shock" or shin of beef (a bit higher up) in others.
I think that there are lots of caribbean recipes for cow-heel soup, which all need you to pressure-cook it to tenderise what starts life as a pretty mean cut of beef. Lots of sinew, gristle and jelly - if that rings any bells?
In my cookery I often use shin (cheaper than casserole or braising steak) and oxtail, both of which I cook long, slow and at a low temperature. I often cook a beef pie with beef I have already casseroled for 24 hours if that appeals to you. Let me know if you want a recipe and I will share what I do.

work over for the week :T
hips are killing me and my shoulder's playing up something wicked so I want to get some 'easy food' out of the freezer meaning when oh get's back from work it's 10 minutes from cooked.
he can wrangle the sprogglets and do the bath while i plate up
i'm taking out
pork sausages (cook from frozen)
chicken breasts
mashed carrots and swede
sausage, baked potato and beans tonight, need to check the coleslaw
roast chicken dinner tomorrow with roastiesAlmost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you. Anne Lamott
It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?
Please consider buying some pet food and giving it to your local food bank collection or animal charity. Animals aren't to blame for the cost of living crisis.0 -
Thankfully DH caught me just after I posted yesterday and before I'd taken dinner out - possible pizza study session out. So I've left things in the freezer. It will just take a bit longer to cook if he does come back.
Salmon with flavoured couscous was lovely - I had a very exercise heavy morning and really needed something solid.Goals - Weight loss 6/26lb at 22nd Jan 18Mmmm. 26lb at 1/7/18. Oops:o0 -
Well - DH en route so burgers and chips prepped.
Apparently we are having 2 extra for lunch tomorrow. (And possibly dinner) Quick change in plans - dinner was already going to generate leftovers, there just won't be any.
Lunch, there is Ham and Bean soup and homemade bread in the freezer. So that will create even more space. YAY.Goals - Weight loss 6/26lb at 22nd Jan 18Mmmm. 26lb at 1/7/18. Oops:o0 -

Suffolk Lass:- Thanks for the offer of recipes. I used to cook steak and cowheel pie when I lived up north. Basically it was braising steak cut into pieces, with carrot and onion, seasoned and floured and cooked slowly with a calves foot. I used to get the foot from the tripe shop. The resulting meat was very tender, gelatinous and had a distinctive sweet taste. It didn't need thickening just colouring with the old fashioned browning and put in short crust pastry. I only did a top crust but my mother used to do a top and bottom crust. I think I'll have another word with a local butcher and see if he can get calves feet, I expect I could freeze them.
Now back to more modern days
OUT
2 x ribeye steaks, we should have had them New Years day but we were full of colds so didn't bother.
HM profiteroles filled with toffee sauce.
IN
2 x casseroles - made yesterday0
