Specialized wrote: »Hey guys, I called CPP hotline this morning having paid for both ID protection and Card Payment protection from 2007 to 2013. They claim I have 2 policies although neither are covered! The first policy I have (Identity Protection) was taken out with BT in 2007 & cancelled in 2011. The second policy I had (Card Protection) taken out with Barclaycard and thus they do not compensate for these providers. Should I contact both providers to claim compensation or am I wasting my time?
Identity Protection has to have been sold (a) by CPP, directly or via a referral from another party, but not directly by another party, and (b) via telephone, to be included in the redress scheme. (Source: Explanatory Statement, p. 5)
BT's Identity Protection website directs queries to 0844 848 4277, which is CPP's phone number, and this document suggests the BT-branded product was technically sold by CPP and not BT. Therefore in order for it to fall outside the redress scheme it was presumably not sold via telephone. I would contact CPP to complain, on the above phone number or via post: CPP Contact Us, Holgate Park, York, YO26 4GA, or use their website's Contact Us form at http://www.cpp.co.uk/about-cpp/contact-us/
Card Protection on Barclaycards was offered by CPP until January 2004 and by Affinion under the Sentinel brand from January 2004. (Source). Your policy was therefore with Affinion and doesn't come under the CPP redress scheme. A recent newspaper story reported that Lloyds and other banks were, along with Affinion, in talks with the FCA about setting up a compensation scheme. You could wait to see what comes of this, or fire off a letter to Barclaycard and see what happens.0 -
Hello
I am trying to fill in my Compensation Claim Form from CPP.
However, I am currently unable to find my policy, so I don’t know if it says a) it would cover me for up to £100,000 worth of unauthorised transactions if my card was lost or stolen, or b) it would cover me for up to £5,000 worth of unauthorised transactions that occurred before I informed them a card was lost or stolen.
Nor can I recall what I was told at the point of sale.
Therefore, I am not sure which of the two template statements suggested in the ‘Reclaim CPP Card Protection’ section of MSE to enter on the form.
Any suggestions?
Was there perhaps a date from when the policy wording changed from one to the other?
Many thanks.

You don't know what you bought and you don't know why you bought it. I'd suggest you have no valid reason to claim for compensation.0 -

There was indeed a date that the policy wording changed, to remove mentions of the misleading post-notification cover (the £100,000), which in all cases was during 2011. Check pages 41-42 of the Explanatory Statement for the exact "Product Amendment Date" that applies to your policy. If you're not sure who sold the policy to you, ring the freephone number on the letter and ask. They should also tell you the dates you held the policy. This might jog your memory.
The pre-notification cover (the £5,000) didn't replace the above: it was touted as a second selling-point alongside the post-notification cover. If you read the February letter from the redress scheme it explains these two possible mis-selling aspects.
EDIT: Slightly confusing point: the Product Amendment Dates section of the Explanatory Statement makes no mention of the pre-notification cover, referring only to post-notification cover. However, the February letter states that current CPP policies do not have the "misleading" pre- OR post-notification cover.0 -
Thank you for your replies.
I was led to believe that the policy would provide cover for unauthorised transactions if I lost my cards, or they were stolen.
However, I can’t recall anything about the specific limits referred to in the policy wording - but that may be because this wasn’t made clear to me at the point of sale, i.e. the policy was mis-sold.
However, as the policy was definitely sold before 2011, it presumably would have included the £100,000 wording?

Probably. However you do not need to recall exact limits, or state them on your claim form. You can say what you posted above: "I was led to believe that the policy would provide cover for unauthorised transactions if I lost my cards, or they were stolen", but add something like, "and that this was useful cover and value for money. However I have since learnt that I was covered by my card issuer for all such transactions which occurred after I reported the card lost or stolen."
If that aspect (post-notification cover) was how you think you were mis-sold there is no need to mention the pre-notification cover and, as I say, no need to mention numbers at all.0 -
Thanks for this, Neil - most insightful and helpful.0

I know you cant claim for CPP redress if the policy started before 2005 which mine did (circa 2000) so i will write to the bank, however if i renew this every year can i still claim?
My policy renews every September, they write to me and i have to inform them if i wish to cancel. Am i right in thinking i will need to address through the bank?0 -

No, you're not. You can make a claim through the Redress Scheme regardless of when the policy started. Any compensation granted will only go back to 2005. If you wish to make claim for a period prior to that, then you'll have to address that to the appropriate bank or building society.0 -
age range 18 to 64yrs is a requirement with PPI ,are the same age limits applicable with CPP? I was 68yrs when the transaction occured.0
