  • I am in a very similar position with the same provider, but had a very different experience on the phone. Can you let me know which number you contacted them on?

When I called, I explained I was looking to complain directly to them about the period prior to 2005, and asked for an address to write to. As soon as I mentioned CPP I was told that they had a special department for CPP enquiries. I was put on hold and put through to CPP directly, who I had already previously spent a fair amount of time talking to that morning.

I called Natwest back, and they again tried to put me through to CPP. I dialled the customer services number on the back of my card, but if there is a different number I should try I would be interested to have it.

    Thanks

I phoned the number on the back of my card and was redirected to their complaints department. All I said was that I would like details of how to reclaim the pre_2005 premiums. They didn't ask for any details and said I would be contacted within so many days (can't remember how many). I received a letter to say it was being dealt with and then a few days later a letter with a cheque attached :)

Thanks - I did try calling them and failed the security questions miserably. Guessed correctly that it was Egg, but I took the card out over 10 years ago, so couldn't pass the 'date I took the policy out' question.

I would try ringing again and speaking to someone else. Like davemidd I rang for the very purpose of finding out which bank it was and what dates: using those as security questions seems unreasonably difficult.

I merely had to give my date of birth and a previous address.
  • I did not know I had CPP. As far as I know the bank never advised me or even asked. Can I reclaim premiums?

Only if you have a valid reason for claiming that the policy was mis-sold. (Not knowing you had the policy is not a reason.)

Not on that basis I'm afraid.

It's a myth sponsored by claims companies that PPI (and CPP) was added without the knowledge and permission of the customer. It's not mis-sold simply because the customer has forgotten about it.

You will have been billed for CPP on every monthly statement, clearly shown on a separate line. You will also, at some stage, have signed to purchase the insurance. Saying you didn't know you had it, is simply saying you don't check your statements.

Look for other reasons to complain

Hi, I wondered if anyone might be able to give me a bit of advise regarding claiming CPP pre2005? My policy was with a Debenhams store card, which was originally with GE Capital, which then changed to GE Money, and now is with Santander I believe. I payed the card off in 2006, (took it out in 2001) when it was still under GE Money, so I wondered how I would go about claiming for this? I have previously tried to claim for the PPI on this account through Santander without success, they basically told me that I had no claim, even though I gave valid reasons for why I was missold the policy. Anyway they didn't send the letter out to me to tell me their decision until after 8 weeks from the date on the letter! (only found out as I phoned to check progress, and they said it was closed so sent copy of the letter.) So I assumed I couldn't continue the claim through them. If I try to persue for CPP through Santander, am I likely to receive the same response?
Any info would be greatly appreciated, so thanks in advance.

You won't know (or will anyone else) until you try. I would suggest writing to Santander saying what you are claiming, why you are claiming it and include as much detail as you can. That would be my commonsense approach.

My husband phoned Santander 10 days ago to claim back his premiums from 1998-2004 for a Topman account originally with GE Capital. They were very helpful and today he had a letter offing him £190! He did not have to fill in any forms, it was just one phone call. He had also been rejected for a ppi claim with them so definitely give them a call! 😃
  • Has anyone had any joy with HSBC for pre-2005 claims?

@peacock1974 - I tried with HSBC for pre-2005 but failed. To be honest I'm not sure if their defence holds up as it is rather convoluted in its explanation.

When I get some time I shall go through it and decide if it is worthwhile raising it to the ombudsman for an independent view. In the meantime I have asked for copies of the original sales literature and T&C's. It has been some time since I spoke to them so I may give them a nudge or I must just take that as my cue to raise it further.
