Tesco dumped my shopping and ran!

There's a few things going on here:

Firstly the Customer paid and ordered shopping to be delivered at a time convenient to her, not the driver, the focus is that online shopping is delivered when you want it not when the driver wants to go home early.

Secondly, you can't leave babies unattended in the bath, it's very dangerous, as a mum of one, it goes against my instincts to leave a baby crying to answer the door.

Thirdly the driver had a refrigerated van, why take the food out? He has to wait if he's early and has not made a courtesy phone call. I wouldn't be pleased, yes 15 minutes is not a very long time but this was an arranged service paid for and one in a long line of incorrect timing on Tesco's behalf, so I would be annoyed as well.

I hope Op has got in touch with Tesco, complained and asked for a goodwill token as it has happened on more than one occasion and is unacceptable.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do

Tesco would not offer a delivery service if they didn't make a profit from it, as already stated. And they make vast profits every year. I guess we are all clear on that one?

Tesco and other supermarkets DO squeeze every last drop out of their suppliers as they know the suppliers have no choice and yes, this is because consumers demand low prices. Tesco are the middle 'men' and want to buy products as cheaply as possible, to make profit and keep customers. Once they have taken over an area and seen off all but a very few and determined small shops, they then start to squeeze the customer.

This they do by increasing the initial low prices used to lure people away from smaller shops and, secondly, by delivering poor service.

They offer a set service, at a set price, and they should deliver that service. If they can't, then they should follow the procedure they themselves have set. It is of no relevence whatsoever that the service is cheaper for the customer than going to the shop themselves! The point is, Tesco WILL still be making money out of it and the customer is paying. Just because we the consumer benefit from the service, in price and convenience, does NOT mean we should accept poor service! The OP is justifiably annoyed at the poor service received.

As consumers, we do not ONLY have the option of voting with our feet. We can, and should, ensure these companies do what they say they will do - that way we all benefit - even the companies themselves. As already said, Tesco WILL be making money out of home deliveries - they would not be doing it otherwise.

They promote the convenince side of it and that is why most of us use the home delivery service. If they cannot deliver the service they are offering, then they need to take steps to change that service.

It's not rocket science! If we the customer have the power to keep the prices low then we also have the power to make Tesco deoiver the service they offer and charge for!!!

Isn't voting with our feet avoiding the main issue here, or essentially doing what the OP has been slated for? Just cutting our noses off to spite our faces isn't it, if we then have to spend hours shopping, rather than confront Tesco and make them deliver the service they offer?

Kid in bath, doorbell rings, take kid out of bath, wrap in towel, answer door, not hard is it, I don't know how all the mothers on here cope with their kids with all the possible distractions in life.

PS The OP's kids weren't in the bath, they were supposedly getting ready for bed, which is not very dangerous, and no excuse for not answering the door.

(Waiting for floods of mothers now to moan about how hard it is to get their kids into bed and asleep, this is unlikely to be helped by a delivery man knocking at the door).

There is no evidence the refrigerated food was out before the husband got home.

It makes no difference what the OP was actually doing - the driver was early and didn't check with her before unoading the shopping. They should stick to the delivery times, or ask if they can deliver early - end of.

I can't see why it matters what the situation was for the customer at the time but I do know, referring to an earlier post of yours, that one child is easier than three.

However, if the OP's children were already in bed, I'm sure she'd have just answered the door. This isn't about the OP being lazy or unable to cope with her children is it? It's about Tesco offering a service, the OP taking steps to fit it within her routine and Tesco not doing what they promised.

The OP fulfilled her side of the deal - she'd have been ready to take the shopping, wth children tucked in bed, at 9pm. It's the delivery driver who has is at fault and Tesco for not acting on this in previous weeks!!!

I don't see why everyone's got so annoyed by the original post to be honest. It's a fair enough annoyance, you paid for delivery at a certain time and it didn't happen. I wouldn't be happy either in that situation, because if they aren't going to come at that time why did you have to pay for the privilage?

The basic problem is that the service the OP paid for didn't happen, she paid for delivery at a certain time. Now I know early is better than later for most, but in this case it wasn't. At the very least there should be an apology letter, and perhaps a token gesture of refund of delivery as what she paid to have didn't happen.

I used Tesco's delivery and had a delivery come when I wasn't there, they came back and got the signiture - don't know where they'd gone to - I assume another delivery close by so they could pop back. They turned up 30 minutes early which annoyed me as I booked a time specifically because I was in an exam until 10 minutes before the time I chose.

I don't exactly live in a fantastic area and it did worry me that they'd leave £40 of goods out on the front garden (The doorstep is partially concealed by plants so the front garden made the obvious choice I understand) where I know it could have disappeared - especially as there was alcohol in that particular shopping.

I was told that they had tried to call me but no-one answered but in checking my phone saw there was no missed call.

I ended up deciding it wasn't worth the hassle, dragged my shopping in and wrote a letter of complaint to tesco's. I never did hear back, but now if I get shopping delivered I pop down to iceland, pay for my goods and they deliver them for free at a slot I pick. It's not as specific as Tesco's, but it costs nothing, they can't change what I've bought and not once has it been out of the time slot I've picked.

I may not have gotten an apology, and clearly they haven't changed what they do, but I recommend other stores to my friends and once they hear what happened they tend to shy away from using the service. I'm sure many people get really good service, but here it seems it's rather lacking.

Thank god for other stores eh!

Yes, I am going to try and bow out gracefully at this stage, as we have argued every point to the death and we are not going to agree methinks!

Been an interesting discussion though, although it did get a bit heated at times! We have some very different expectations of customer service that's for sure.

    Bestpud,

We know what the initial cause of the issue was, they came early, to most people, that is no big issue, and the people on the other side of the argument to you think the OP added to her own issue by ignoring the door.

Tesco were wrong, too efficient, whatever, but so was the OP, they could have answered the door and prevented all this.

The drowning/crying babies argument has been used by various people as an argument for not answering the door, which is the only reason I mentioned it.

    albertross,

Yes she could have. I don't think she had any obligation to, but she could have told him to wait a while.

However, I also know it can be difficult to resettle children when you get interrupted during their bedtime routine.

Perhaps, OP, you could put a note on your door telling them not to unload until 9pm as you cannot get the shopping in until then?

A while back i rushed to answer the door, i slipped on the laminate flooring and ended up on the floor. Now because one of my legs doesn't have much feeling in it it took me at least 10 Min's to get up off the floor, which, by that time they had gone.

Another time I knocked a vase off a small table onto the floor which smashed into many pieces and i accidentally stood on a piece of the broken pottery and sliced one of my toes in half, boy did that hurt, luckily i always clip the phone on my belt so i don't have to find it, so i could phone someone. I didn't answer the door that day either.

These days I don't rush, depending on what I'm doing i don't always bother to answer because if it is a friend, they will always phone first.
