Prices will rise once the major supermarkets have an absolute monopoly.

That situation will never happen, there will always be a place for smaller shops.

I think Tesco prices have risen pretty sharply over the last year or two and I can only see it getting worse. Unfortunately, the suppliers will still be squeezed and Tesco etc pocket the difference. Can't lose really, can they?

Commodities have risen over the last 18 months, that's why prices have risen.

You think they might turn on the people who provide their profits?

Presumably because what was there before was not all that good?

It was such a trivial problem...

Not turn on customers, as such, but they can certainly offer poorer products and service if customers have no choice. They have turned on suppliers so customers are the obvious next in line really.

The problem with 24 hour, all in one, shopping is we like the convenience so yes, they are better in some ways than what was there before. The problem comes when Tesco provide such a shoddy service that we lose that all important convenience and pau extra for the privilege.

This particular event would be trivial if the driver had rang and if they hadn't done it before. It should be the odd occassion this type of thing happens and if it is more than that, then Tesco should look to changing their service to one they can work to.

I'm not so sure about that. We have, I think, two butchers left in my area now and three green grocers. Small shops will always exist but they won;t be able to provide the range of products that the bigger shops do becaus ethey don't have the power to squeeze suppliers.

They can't turn on their suppliers, otherwise where would they get supplies from?

I'm not aware that Tesco do provide a shoddy service, and in such a competitive enviornment, they would not last long if they did.

It was a trivial event, and I'm amazed anyone would have bothered to report it to an internet forum.

Supermarkets only care about areas of big population, that's even true for the smaller local ones.

By their very nature small shope will never be able to provide the range of products that the bigger shops do, but there will always be a place for them.

Never thought I'd get involved in one of these, but........... How much earlier would the driver need to be to convince some of you that it was too early?
I used to have my shopping delivered by Ocado. I'd book my slot. If the driver was going to be early he'd ring ( at least 10 minutes out) and ask if it would be possible to deliver early. I always said "yes" and without exception, the driver was appreciative and grateful, sometimes to the point of embarrassment.:rotfl:
As a mum to 4 I'd NEVER answer the door when bathing them. It takes seconds for a baby/child to drown in a couple of inches of water:eek: The driver couldn't possibly know what I was doing that was causing me not to answer the door, and therefore should not start to unload, even if he was *convinced* someone was in.
The point is, a service was booked which was not delivered. If you booked for a delivery on Tuesday, would the fact that you were in on Monday make it OK to deliver then? A bit extreme I'll grant you, but as I say, how early does it need to be to convince you it was too early?

All you had to do was answer the door and sign for some shopping.

    Not much to ask really....

Umm, you're rather missing the point, aren't you? Yes, if it was me, I would have answered the door, but that hardly excuses Tesco's crappy service, does it. The OP had complained on numerous occasions, and they continue to miss the delivery slots that have been pre-arranged, precisely because they are convenient to the OP. In case you hadn't noticed, the forum is specifically a consumer vent board for people to 'vent' about poor service. The service was poor, end of story.

Oh, let me guess, the poor service is the OP's fault, because she shouldn't be using them anymore after their poor service in the past?

albertross, on most things I'd agree with you, early delivery of an internet order is great:D I do, however, think that a grocery order is somewhat different. Delivery slots are between 1 or 2 hours. The fact that you book that tight a slot says something. I really don't think they should attempt delivery outside of the agreed slot without OKing it first:D Just my opinion, but I think that's what you pay your £5 or whatever for;)

Think we're going to have to agree to differ on this one, albatross:D
I don't consider £5 to be that cheap, and certainly Tesco must consider it worthwhile since I don't think they're a charity;) The extra trade generated by home delivery must be worthwhile or else Tesco certainly wouldn't do it!!
See you edited your first reply as to kids drowning:eek: :rotfl: :rotfl: The point is , don't offer agreed delivery times unless you're prepared to keep to them.
    Now you've done two edits!!!!

If I book at taxi for 4pm and it turns up at 3.45pm then, if it's no trouble to me, I just jump in. If I have things to sort before I leave, I tell the driver that the booking was for 4pm and let him sit there... not to be a nuisance but because I didn't tell them I needed it for 3.45pm and I just can't go at that time.

Same applies here imo and I would have opened the door to explain that the slot was 9pm and you need to sort your kids bedtime out (which is why you booked that slot) so you can't take the delivery til they're sorted.

I think the key is to communicate the situation if there's a potential problem which only takes 2 seconds and even if the driver thinks "damn, can't get home early" or whatever, well at least he's not going to unload to a doorstep.

I would also guess that drivers get given wrong times to arrive at through no fault of their own and, although it may not be the case here, there's always the possibility they think they're bang on time rather than very early or very late and without being told otherwise, they really may not even know.
