My Ryanair flight from Reus to London Stansted last year was delayed by more than five hours due to a safety/technical problem with the aircraft. I sent Ryanair the pro forma letter on the MSE site, and received the following response. Not a legal expert, so don't know whether they're just calling my bluff here in the hope that I give up. Any advice gratefully received!
[STRIKE]"EU261/2004 requires airlines to provide the Article 14.1 notice at the point of check-in and to distribute the Article 14.2 notice during a flight disruption. However, in order to ensure that the we are compliant with EU261 at all times, we can confirm that EU261/2004-Article 14.1 is printed on all online boarding passes and displayed at the airport bag drop area. The Article 14.2 notice (in the relevant language) is provided to the passengers as they check-in online and it is also available at all times on our website and homepage flight disruption notices.
Notwithstanding the above our airport handling agents have confirmed that assistance was provided along with the distribution of the EU261 Article 14.2 passenger notice. [/STRIKE]
Totally irrelevant
We can assure you that Ryanair took all reasonable measures to prevent this flight delay, which was caused by an unexpected aircraft safety/technical problem (extraordinary circumstances). Please note that when flights are delayed for reasons outside of the control of an airline, monetary compensation is not applicable under EU Reg. 261/2004 (Article 7).
Once again we sincerely apologise for the delay to your flight, however given the above we are unable to offer any further reimbursement."
Look at the FAQ's the airline can NOT say technical problems are "Extraordinary circumstances"
You could reply with the Template that Centipede100 wrote and\or ask Ryanair exactly what was the cause of the delay0 -

Hi, I had a flight from London-Singapore with my mother a while back in 2007. It was with Singapore Airlines.
We were sat on the plane for 5 hours before they said we wouldn't be going anywhere due to technical problems. We were then put on a flight the next day.
Do I have any grounds for compensation? If so, could I also do so for my mother as she is elderly and also does not live in the UK?0 -
Centipede100 wrote: »What were the flight details? Flight number/date/reasons given in writing?
You would have to make separate claims IMO.
SQ321 6 October 2007
I was thinking that I would wait until the 22nd to see if this 2 year limit goes through?0 -

I have stated this on more than 1 occasion to you now as the airline will do nothing except write to you but they will not settle your claim unless you start legal proceedings. Stop writing to the airline.
Either do precisely that or drop your claim now.
I know. I have gave up contacting the airline. I know I should start legal proceedings but I genuinely don't know how, I wouldn't even know where to start. I find things like this daunting due to my Autism. Because of my Autism I can't even walk in to my local court and even enquire as to where to start. Being a tight Aberdonian I'm reluctant to hand my claim to a 3rd party to do for me.0 -
Hi,
Was wondering if somebody could tell me if we can now claim. My wife and kids were on a flight from Heathrow to Johannesburg on 29 April 2011 and there was a delay of about 3.5 hours and it was South African Airways' fault. I had previously written to them just after the event and if I recall correctly they said my claim didn't fall under the jurisdiction and I thought it was because for flights over 3,500km delays must be more than 4 hours. Can we now claim anyhting?
Thanks0 -

I note that you have a few problems and that you dont want to involve 3rd parties to handle any claim for you.
If you are serious about submitting a claim, perhaps you should consider the Money Claim Online route.
This can obviously all be done on a computer.
There a a few links on here to the MCOL one of which is on Blindmans recent update on links etc.I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left!0 -
I know I went away from Manchester - Greece during early Aug' 2007 for a package holiday with Thomas Cook.
Our flight home was delayed for around 8 hours and we were giving nothing other than a sandwich and a drink.
I can't find details of flights or even booking confirmation of the holiday. However I have checked with my bank and they are sending me out confirmation of my purchase with Thomas Cook.
Will I be able to obtain my holiday details from Thomas Cook so I can claim?
Thanks in advance.0 -

I flew with United Airlines to San Francisco on the 17th October.
When the plane was about to pushed back, the generator failed. We were stuck on the plane for over 3 hours while they replaced the generator. It was then identified that the inflight TV system was not working, but the cabin crew told us they couldnt open the doors again to have this looked at as the crew had worked too many hours and if the doors opened, they had to get off which would mean the flight cancelled. So we flew to SF with no entertainment.
When we arrived at SF we were then stuck on the plane for another hour as they couldnt open the door.
As an apology we were told to log onto United Airlines website to claim a compensation. But this was just money of our next flight if we flew internal around America (no use to me) or air miles (again, no use to me).
Does it sound like I can claim anything?
I've tried to find an email or an address to complain to in writing but had no luck - can anyone help??
