Come off pill 6 months before and start cycle charting and temperature taking so you are ahead on knowing when you ovulate for a 6 month period. I did this for a year though.

For my implant coming out, we waited until an accidental pregnancy would be ok, rather than a problem, we are lucky that there were a few months between the "ideal" TTC time and the time where pregnancy would have been an issue though. The downside of this, is that I am now impatiently waiting for things to return to normal, but I know this is better for us than a pregnancy back in November just gone.

  • A couple of questions I've been on the pill for 5 years when would be best to come off before we started trying?

Also is there anything else I need to do in preparation, I thought it was pretty straightforward but after reading the posts I'm beginning to understand that it isn't.

    Thanks :)

    Hi oscarsmummy!

Welcome - Try not to panic! There are so many acronyms floating about the TTC world that it can become very daunting and confusing. Sometimes I feel like pretending i don't know anything about it all and just having sex and making a baby (because lets be honest, essentially that's all it takes!).

I am planning to start TTC in April, I took my last pill a week ago. A lot of people stop taking them a lot earlier, but i didn't really want to change to another form of contraception and so i waited until now. For the next month me and hubby will try and not do the 'thing' that makes a baby while we wait for my cycle to get back in to a rhythm, but if baby did happen a little earlier than the 'perfect' time it's not the end of the world :)

I would advise you read a book to gently walk you in to the TTC world. I am reading 'what to expect before you are expecting' and 'the impatient woman's guide to getting pregnant'. Both are really easy to read and not too scary (I also bought a recommended book called (i think) 'Taking charge of your fertility' - but it is about 3 inches thick and looks like a text book so i haven't even opened it!)

I am taking prenatal vitamins (actually, i am taking pregnancy vitamins but they had the same thing in, and were half the price of the prenatal ones in boots!) and i am eating some of the recommended foods etc.

I don't plan to 'chart' any time soon, i will watch out for some of the ovulation signals in my cycle, but I am not putting the pressure on myself of taking my temperature etc at this early stage (if it takes a long time however I will probably do all of these things!).

I think there is a HUGE amount of preparation you could do if you wanted to, but if you watch enough episodes of 'I didn't know I was Pregnant' you'll realise it can just happen, and babies arrive happy and healthy even when they weren't expected! Personally am taking some of the advice but balancing that with just relaxing and doing the BD (Baby Dance - TTC acronym!) with my husband and hoping that's enough to make a baby! :T
:) Trying to be good and watch the pennies, but guilty of falling off the wagon every so often! :p

Thank you that's great advice. I already have the 'what to expect before you're expecting' and I've had a quick flick through ill have a more in depth read nearer the time.

Regards to coming off the pill I was thinking around July time as I will have finished my degree by then in advance of officially TTC around November.

Quick question did you go and see your doctor before coming off the pill or did you just take the last one of the packet and not continue with another pack?

    Thanks for your help :)
  • It's been a while since I've posted here... Not much to say! OH has been away for a few months now and returns in just over 3 weeks. We will be ttc immediately!

I came off the pill when he left and my cycle has gone back to "normal" very quickly, a perfect 28 day cycle. I have been taking temps since I came off the pill, but my cycle seems so regular I'm not sure I really need to. I have started taking folic acid, and have sent OH man vitamins, which he thinks are already working lol.

Fingers crossed it doesn't take too long once we start ttc. I was watching OBEM the other night, mega jealous!! Keep thinking if by miracle I did get pregnant right away our baby would be due round about Christmas... Not when I'd ideally want it, but I'd rather it then than not at all!
  • oscarsmummy- I did go and see my doctor (actually I went about something else and asked about that while I was there). She was pretty much completely indifferent about it all and just said 'stop taking your pill' - that was pretty much the extent of the advice!

Paige Turner - I am glad I am not the only one obsessed with OBEM (actually I am obsessed with everything pregnancy - one born is just the start! I also have pretty much every other show with 'baby' and 'pregnant' in the title on record on my TiVo!). Looks like you, me and Jellybox might all be migrating from 'waiting to ttc' to 'ttc' at the same time (although you are one step ahead as you are already on a regular cycle! :T)

I have a question - is anyone here collecting baby stuff already? My little sister collected bits and bobs really early on in her TTC journey (it took her 12 months to get pregnant) and I want to use the boot fairs in the summer to start gathering bits whether I am pregnant or not, but I also worry about having too much baby stuff around should the TTC journey not go quite as planned! What are your thoughts?

  • thanks Miss Bolan for the advice I was going to see my doctor but after what yours said to you I'm not sure there's much point haha! I'm not collecting baby things yet but I think once we officially start trying I may do if I see something I want, although I agree with you I don't want a reminder there if we find it difficult.

Paige Turner - I'm obsessed with OBEM too watched it on Monday and make myself even more broody!!

    Hello all

First time posting on any sort of baby/TTC thread so am a bit nervous even writing it down! OH and I have talked about starting a family in a couple of years, though I am currently on the injection I'll be having my last one next week which will see me to June, and then I will go on the pill for a year and then probably NTNP for 6 months or so before actively TTC Jan 2016. Just writing that down makes it seem aaaaggggeeesss away, but I'm excited to be taking the first step by having my last injection if that makes sense?!

Oh, and I absolutely love OBEM and cry every single episode :rotfl:

Miss Bolan, I have a couple of bits (a few unisex clothes and a baby bouncer) that my sister has given to me that my nephew has outgrown, but they're boxed away in the loft so that they're not "around" if you see what I mean.

I am not collecting already, part of me thinks its far too soon and it might be a jinx. I think as soon as I (hopefully) get a BFP I will probably be too excited to stop myself though!!

One of my friends has been collecting baby stuff for years, I'm talking about 10 years and she's not even trying!! She claims its for presents to give to other people when they have babies, but I swear she has a massive box of stuff...

I'm only just letting myself get into baby programmes because I knew it would make me even more clucky, so this is the first time I've watched OBEM... Will need to check my Sky planner to see what other progs I can watch!!
