Thanks to the documents on this site I reclaimed £700 pounds from my bank who didn't even grumble in which now most of the people in the office where I work are now reclaiming and all have signed to Martin's newsletter
thanksyou all:T0 -
Bank: HSBC
Amount claimed: £2166
Amount paid: £2354
I started court proceedings against HSBC, claiming charges and statutory interest.
HSBC put in a defence against my claim, then the case was put on hold until the outcome of the test case in Jan08.
BUT, I got a letter from the HSBC solicitors offering to pay the claim in full. This included statutory interest up to date and the refund of my court fees.
Of course I accepted. They paid me within 5 days.

Congratulations Graham, I also have a success story
Bank: Nationwide
Calimed: £5,000- as this is the limit in small claims court
Paid out: £7,238 as went through Financial Ombudsman
I received a letter from FOS yesterday stating that NAtionwide are paying all my charges plus interest-Whoopee!
I was suprised as thought all claims were on hold but Nationwide didn't want the FOS to pursue the claim-running scared or what?
So go ahead everyone, use the FOS as it's free and very effective
Thanks Martin you are a life saver

Bank - Nationwide
Amount Claimed - £370
I had an automatic direct debit that accessed my account earlier than usual. I had not transferred the money into my account in time but the money was put in the next day which was the usual day that the direct debit took the money out. As the dd had bounced I was then charged £30 every month by Nationwide.
I wrote to the Nationwide explaining the error and pointing out that I had never had this happen in the 20 years I had been banking with them and please could they refund me as a one off. They refused. I felt this was unfair as I was not a regular "problem" banker so wrote to them again. I got nowhere with Nationwide who just kept sending me standard letters and refusing to refund me.
After a few months of this I wrote to the Ombudsman who wrote to Nationwide on my behalf and the overdrawn bank fees were refunded to my account. I thought this was an end to the matter but after 6 months I suddenly had charges levied on my account again. As I had not used it since the initial overdrawn fee was levied I knew the charges were not down to me.
Turned out after emailing Nationwide to find out why, that the Nationwide had only agreed with the Ombudsman to re-pay charges for 6 months and as I had not paid the initial £30 bank charge I was still "overdrawn" in their eyes (no-one notified me of this decision) so I had the charges levied again. I wrote to the Ombudsman again and after about 4 months got all of the fees repaid from Nationwide. I breathed a sigh of relief.
Nationwide then sent me a letter and form asking me to sign that I would never again challenge them or ask that charges be refunded. I signed and returned the form but put the proviso that I would only challenge them and ask that charges be refunded if I felt they were acting unfairly. So Nationwide closed my account with a month's notice. I was furious as this was a main account of mine.
I wrote to the Ombudsman again, filled out various forms, waited about 6 months (receiving monthly letter updates from the Ombudsman - just saying that they were working on my case but had been inundated with complaints) and then finally received a full and final offer of £250 from Nationwide as compensation for closing my account. I accepted this.
After about a year since the accidental overdraft occurred I was given compensation for Nationwide closing my account and had all my overdrawn bank charges refunded but it was a long, hard slog and only due to the Ombudsman intervention on my behalf. Nationwide were totally unapproachable and just sent standard letters to me, despite my asking them not to. The amount I reclaimed was not a large amount but it was the principal as much as anything as I felt I had been treated poorly after being a customer with them for many many years.0 -
Bank: RBS
Amount Reclaimed: £1285
Amount they paid: £1285
The story:
I had all my banks statements since I had opened my acc with RBS. I used the templates from the site to reclaim, to which they responded really quickly and within 4 weeks I had £1285 back in my acc.
When I first realised that I could make such a claim I knew I had a few bank charges going back over over the years, but when I calculated it I didn't expect to see a figure of over £1200. It was certainly worthwhile receiving the weekly e-mail and using the templates to make a claim, thank you very much...

ROYAL BANK OF SCOTLAND
AMOUNT CLAIMED £1006
AMOUNT RECIEVED £1006
I successfully claimed my charges with no hassle what so ever. One letter to them with my request, one letter back to say they were considering my claim. Two weeks later came the offer which i accepted as it was the exact amount I had been charged. I never really believed it was possible to get one over on the banks. How wrong can you be.0 -
Bank: Lloyds TSB
Claimed: £750
Received: £750
After using Martin's letter template, received initial reply from Lloyds who held their ground and said charges were to remain. Following Martin's advice to continue with the claim and threaten to take them to court in the next letter, they then conceded and offered to pay full amount. Just a little perseverence was needed and they gave in so don't accept the initial 'No'! The whole process only took a couple of months and required just two letters and got nowhere near court. Thanks Martin! :T0 -
Bank: Alliance & Leicester
Claimed: £34 + costs
Received: £64
They deposited £17 into my account. I said I wanted the full amount "within two weeks", otherwise I'd start court proceedings. No reply, so I issued a claim for the outstanding £17 through HMCS Money Claim Online (cost £30). Case not contested. They deposited £47 into my account.0 -
Bank: HSBC
Amount Reclaimed: £451.50
Amount they paid: £451.50
The story: Sent 1st template letter (in June), response to say they were looking into my case. After 1 month no further response so sent 2nd letter threatening court and they responded offering full settlement which I of course accepted. Thank you Martin, and all success stories on here that encouraged me to apply.
