Don't we all have a right to dress as we please, without being harassed? This sounds dangerously close to saying that someone who's been raped was 'asking for it' because of what they wore.

We all have the right to say what we want, dress as we please and go where we want to go. But not all places/modes of transport/times of day/groups of people are as safe to move amongst as others. it pays to be aware of the dangers and act accordingly. that's common sense, surely?

Here's a bit of news for you. The perpetrator is at fault in such situations, not the victim.
That can't be much comfort to the victims, if the deed is already done.

What is the point on people being hellbent on exercising their rights if the result - however wrong on the part of the perpetrators - is that they get abused and harassed because of it?

im going to put this in bold so maybe it get through your thick bigoted head

the girl was wearing a headscarf and traveled on a public bus at midday she was not doing anything provocative and id presume not exactly hellbent on exercising her rights she was having an everyday experience

you seem to have a right bee in your bunnet about the fact she was wearing a headscarf - are you one of those "im not a racist but i hate those muslims"?

btw where in scotland are you i hate to think you are importing this claptrap into this country......

Why would you call someone racist for not liking Headscarves......Is Wearing a headscarf a Race or only allowed by muslems? Are you telling me only black people are allowed to be muslems?

Maybe what you want to say is...... Are you racist cos she is muslem..... In which case you would be wrong to use the word Racist.

Maybe you need to stop jumping on the Racist bandwagon and go and read up on the term Racist.

It's not race that determines whether people want to integrate into our society. If you are part of a group that chooses to settle in the UK but at the same time describes the local population in derogatory terms and doesn't want to mix with them, then it is likely that there will be some people, (even if they have to be drunk before they have the courage to make their feelings known in public) who will take exception to that group as a whole and take it out on whichever individuals they perceive to be from that group.

I think it's time for you to stop. I find your views sickening and offensive. I can't be the only one.

Op why didn't you record it on your mobile?

And to all those who say 'there is no point doing anything, he was drunk, it might provoke him blah blah' here's an idea... how about reporting it to the driver or taking some other non-provocative action?

I would not be able to sit back and watch a vulnerable person getting abuse whether they be WHITE, BLACK, MUSLIM, JEWISH, ATHEIST or whatever. I may not address the abuser but there are other things I could do to help.

People who say 'forget about it' have no idea how damaging and soul destroying racist abuse is to a person.

    Hi Pinkbubbles,
I am sorry to hear about your friend. Your friend asked you not to say anything and you respected her wishes.

I am white and British and I wear a hijab(head scaf) and have done so for the last 15years. I get abuse from people on a weekly basis. Sometimes on the bus(not always drunk) sometimes from passing cars where they shout from the window(brave). sometimes in the street. To me now, its like water off a ducks back I look at them gracefully and smile. :rotfl:
I was once at a bus stop full of people where someone had a go from across the street this man in his late twenties. no one said anything.
These people are ignorant and rude. If I was in your friends situation I would have done the same thing. but if I saw this happen to someone else I would have to step in even if it was just to comfort the person.

I'm curious as to whether those concentrating on the fact that he was drunk deem it beyond the realms of possibility that he wasn't spouting these views because he was drunk but simply because he was a racist scumbag who would have done the same sober?

OP I'm sorry this happened to you and I honestly think you did the right thing by not confronting him, but I'm not sure I'd have been able to help myself if I was you - even when I was 15. I've confronted a good few people about racism (casual or otherwise) and normally at football grounds. Sometimes you get people backing you up, sometimes they look the other way - generally I've found that the offender is usually too embarassed to pipe back.

I have yet to hear where the drunk guy made racial remarks. For all those who say he was please, I must be being stupid ... point it out?!

I have a feeling people don't understand what the word racist means. Just because the 'victim' is of a different skin colour it doesn't mean that any attack on them is racist or racially motivated.

Words like racist and bully are used far too much, and quite often takes away from those who ARE racially abused or bullied.

And before anyone states that I condone what the drunk guy did (I'm sure some are about to post such nonsence) I certainly do not. If he was sober and stating the nonsence he did I would probably approach it a different way, but because he was drunk, I believe confronting him would have been a pointless exercise. YOU cannot reason with a drunk person. More so one that is sitting on buses during the day p3ssed out of his brain fgs!

From the OP, relevant words bolded to help you out:

the man launches into some sort of racist spiel.
    From what I remember
"If I was prime minister, I'd get rid of these lot, deport the lot of them. For killing that soldier".
Followed by a lot of obscenities, the p word (start of a country), black this and that.
All of these comments aren't made directly to S, but just loud enough for us to hear, and know he's referring to her.
He then launches a personal attack, about S saying that her sort think they are so pretty and pure, yeah right she'd knock off your (text removed by Forum Team) doorbell (unsure what this means, could anyone clear this up?)
referring to the way she is dressed and the fact her hair is covered by a headscarf.
S texts me, guess she is wary that the man may overhear, basically pleading with me to stay quiet, just leave it she doesnt want any trouble and dont even turn around to look at him as you may provoke him, and we will get off at the closest stop to our destination. I text back protesting, and she tells me it'll be her who has to deal with the fallout and if she values our friendship to just leave it.
Another lady gets on, also ethnic and the man launches into an albeit vicious but quiet attack about she's not sitting near me, no effin way.
