Should we only fund degree courses that lead to higher paying careers?
I was replying to notanewuser there. I agreed with your point.
NANU, I do see your point, but I don't agree with condemning people to boring, low paid jobs for life just so they will be paying a tiny bit in tax when they could be doing something useful to society and paying a bit more. I strongly feel that free education is a right everyone should have at every point in their lives, but I realise not everyone shares that ideology. It seems ridiculous to me that two people who want to work in a vital field may not be able to do so because the government is utterly disinterested in investing in the future of our society. In fact, blow 'it seems', it is ridiculous.
Now could you help me off this soapbox please, my arthritis is playing up again.
Ed: I'm talking about governments in general btw, not just the current lot. Labour also have to bear most of the blame for dismantling the adult education system so thoroughly.0 -
It seems like you might be able to train on the job

I have worked since i left school thankyou i just keep getting made redundant NOT MY FAULT and what lifestyle choice?
Perhaps you could teach your son not to mess about at school and to work hard to get to a good university; so that he doesn't leave education as a low skilled worker?RENTING? Your partner should be able to recieve an NHS bursery which will be non means tested grant and a means tested bursery. she would also be entitiled to additional allowence for dependent.
You should be entitiled to student grant regardless of credit rating unless you have applied for student grant previously.
Money will be tight for you but it will be just manageable with either or both of you working extra hours as a care assistant, but life will be stressful.
Could either of you delay training/study for a few years but work towards your chosen field ie either one of you get work and experience - EXAMPLE: you or partner work as hospital HCA and could train 'in house' as nurse tech taking bloods, canulating, ECGs etc or as an emergency care assistant (ECA assisting paramedics) or even as (ODA) operating dept assistant, just to name a few examples. All very worthwhile and great work experience.0 -
Would training on the job work for you OP? Sounds like a good plan!

Most people do Access courses at FE colleges and the length of course I mentioned is normal. You couldn't possibly take students from GCSE level (sometimes lower) up to university entry in a few months of one day a week!0 -
