The student loan is for his partner who's at uni.

As others have said student loans do not require a credit check because they actually take the payments out of your wages they're not like normal loans.

the bank you spoke to was probably talking about professional study loans and that sort of thing you get from a bank which is very different

Whilst I agree that it is ridiculous for the government to put financial barriers in front of people who want to better themselves (and thus, ironically, end up paying higher taxes), .

Paramedics start on £21k and are unlikely to progress above £35k during their careers. A 4 year degree course will leave them £30k in debt before they start.

They'll pay around £2k per annum in tax, assuming they actually get a job in 6 years time. , but claim more than half back as child benefit, not to mention anything else they might claim.

As told, Student Loans have nothing to do with your credit history.

Instead of going to college full time for two years you could do an access course - about a day a week for a few months - which leads straight to a university application. Have a Google.

Access courses are normally one year full time or two years oart time.

Wow, good point, we should obviously stop funding healthcare courses then.

Presumably that is still more tax than someone on benefits would be paying?

Should we only fund degree courses that lead to higher paying careers?

That's not what I said. The NHS puts a lot of money into training and education for medical staff. The NHS is in the process of being broken up bit by bit and privatised.

There's no need for the OP or his girlfriend to be living solely on benefits. Both are capable of working full time, so at least one of then should. They brought a child into the world, they should do what's necessary to support it.

Not that I have seen but it may depend on the type of course and its provider, the O/P needs to have a Google.
  • No, you need a bicycle. People without wages should not even think of running a car.

(I am in my mid-50s and have never run a car in the UK, so it is certainly possible.

Did you have one of those trailers for your child to ride in attached to the back? Probably not suitable in the O/P's case due to the likelihood of narrow and bendy country lanes.

So you would get money then.

If you can't get student loans then you can't afford for both of you to be studying. One of you get a bloody job and pay at least some of your way in life. It's not for the state to fund your lifestyle choices.

I wonder if willber meant to thank this, or did his finger slip .

(Sorry OP but couldn't resist - check out willber's philosophy on life if you want to know why.)
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D
