Hi, im 22 years old been made redundant 5 times and had 14 jobs since i was 17.
I want to return to college this year, to better my life and get a career to provide for my family and not be jobless and skint all the time, i have been accepted on the course. I have a partner and a 18 month old son. However jobcentre have told me that by going to college i will not get any money at all except child tax credits and child benefit and housing benefit me and my partner (who will be at uni) will not recieve any jsa or income support or any other money to live off, how are we meant to better our lives if they wont let us go into education. We do not have rich parents who can support us through our education were on our own. What are we meant to live off for for next 2 years? Were not entitled to it because we wont be seeking work apparently according to them, but being in college and university does not stop you looking for part time work does it?
You can look after college, weekends or at 2 in the morning on the internet if you really want to so why not. Only way is if my partner puts off uni for now and we can get couple allowance if if one of you is looking for work, but how is she meant to look for work when she would have to look after our son at home (we get free childcare if were in education). If she got a job her entire wage would go on childcare anyway and plus minimum wage one person working you cannot survive i know because i had to move out our house and live apart when i worked cos i couldnt afford to pay rent my money went to getting to work food and bills there was nothing left to pay rent, so now we live together if she did get a job, how would she pay childcare rent and feed us etc impossible country is a joke there just trying to keep the poor poor. Does anyone know how we can get around this?
Please dont say part time job im already looking for part time job. It not only isnt easy but its even harder to try get one that would be around college hours. You must be able to claim income or something if your at college with a child? They cant expect 3 people to live of child tax credits which only buys nappies and clothes anyway?

Are you sure you are entitled to housing benefit? I thought that is what student loan was meant to pay for also job seekers allowance if for people looking for full time work. If your oh is at uni then cant you put off college until they have finished and try and find a job.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

apparently because we have a child we will get housing benefit.we Cant get student loans due to credit ratings after being made redundant so many times and not being able to pay things has ruined our credit ratings stopping us from getting student loans.
I cant put off college because college told me i have to do it this year because its 2 year course and once i get to 24 years old i will have to pay for the course which is 9 grand a year so they tell me.
Even if one us work were only going to get min wage jobs, where we live our no jobs we have to travel out of town and based on rent of £90pw £50pw travelling £40pw car insurance food £50pw electric and gas £30pw baby stuff £50pw adds up to £310pw min wage on 40 hours only brings home £215pw which is why i said we never lived together before because on minimum wage you cant survive. which is why we both need college and uni to get careers with good paid jobspaddedjohn wrote: »Are you sure you are entitled to housing benefit? If you can't get student loans then you can't afford for both of you to be studying. One of you get a bloody job and pay at least some of your way in life. It's not for the state to fund your lifestyle choices.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -

That's fine. If you have to go to college right now (wouldn't want you having to pay for anything yourself, would we?) then your girlfriend is going to have to delay uni or go for an open university course.
What are these courses that will give you a glittering career anyway?Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -

I have worked since i left school thankyou i just keep getting made redundant NOT MY FAULT and what lifestyle choice? i have nothing in my life nothing and yes we would get money child tax credit wow thats just to cover our childs money it does not cover our living costs what good is it having money to feed your child when you cant feed yourself i would eventually die of starvation wouldnt i.
Your just a !!!!!! who obviously has a good job and never been on the dole not everyone wants to be on the dole thats on it. But they need to put minimum wage up so it actually covers living expenses, otherwise why are people going to work no one is going to work if there going to be worse off are they.0 -

You've been made redundant 5 times but had 14 jobs? So what happened the other 9 times? You're averaging 4 months per job. Doesn't sound like redundancy to me - you must be the unluckiest worker ever!!
I worked from 15 to 33 with no breaks and just 2 employers. When I moved out at 17 I worked 3 jobs (while still at school) to pay my way. Those jobs paid all of £2:75 an hour. I've never had a state handout, nor would I expect one (especially not to pay my car insurance!!).
I managed not to get pregnant in all that time, only having my daughter once I'd built my career, got married and seen quite a lot if the world. I was almost 33 when I had my daughter, and having opted for redundancy I now look after her and do consultancy when it suits me. I've funded my own choices in life, paid for my education and worked hard at a career.
You've done it the other way around, chose to have a baby and now you'd like the tax payer to keep you in a home and car and your child in clothes (which don't actually have to cost much at all) while you both do a course? Those are lifestyle choices that the state shouldn't be funding.
My parents went without to feed me. I gave up a £40k+ job to bring up my daughter. Why shouldn't you go without?Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -

Have you thought of moving?
The NHS will have been privatised by the time either of you qualifies, with no guarantee of a job and the risk of opposite shifts. Are you sure you've thought this through?Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -
yes redundancy is different to temporary jobs i had some jobs that have only been temporary for 2 weeks. i once had 4 jobs at the same time. Thats how you get through alot of jobs. Also if you actually read the comment i dont pay for car insurance with state money. i paid it off for the year this year while i was working i dont get enough money off the state to pay £40 a week now, if you read the comment properly i actually said (quote)if i was to even get a job now on minimum wage i would need £90pw £50pw travelling £40pw car insurance food £50pw electric and gas £30pw baby stuff £50pw adds up to £310pw min wage on 40 hours only brings home £215pw MY INSURANCE RUNS OUT IN 3 WEEKS SO IN ORDER TO GET A JOB I WILL NEED MORE INSURANCE TO GET THERE WHICH WILL COST ME £40 A WEEK OUT OF WORKING WAGES! and add it up like i said mimimum wage does not cover living costs they dont take into consideration people need to travel to work and people my age insurance is high please tell me how i can get a job without qualifications that is going to pay me at least £310 that i would need just to survive? cos min wage is £215 a week on 40 hours
i dont actually know what we will do when my insurance runs out cos i cant afford it on state money!0 -
