Don't understand why you were refused, CTC, as long as you are responsible for a child but for WTC you need to be working over 24 hours pw but in previous years it was 16 pw
Forums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.

You don't pay back the grant but the loan is repaid when income is high enough, you need to check with student services to see if you're eligible.

You should be applying for the maintenance grant and special support grant as you are eligible for housing benefit.

Check the info' here, especially part 2:

  • As told, Student Loans have nothing to do with your credit history.

Instead of going to college full time for two years you could do an access course - about a day a week for a few months - which leads straight to a university application. Have a Google.

Your just a !!!!!! who obviously has a good job and never been on the dole not everyone wants to be on the dole thats on it. But they need to put minimum wage up so it actually covers living expenses, otherwise why are people going to work no one is going to work if there going to be worse off are they.

not with them no and yes

Student loans (from the student loans company rather than a bank) are not based on credit rating in any way unless you actually owe money to the student loan company themselves. http://www.studentbeans.com/student-finance/a/student-loans/can-you-get-a-student-loan-with-a-bad-credit-rating1747.html

I would suggest you contact SLC as a first step: http://www.slc.co.uk/

Ah thanks for that info I will be having this with them then when I tried to claim for it originally when we did live together they declined it cos I was under 25

They will not have told you no unless you tried to apply when living apart in which case, you would not have been entitled to Tax Credits. There is a handy calculator online which would tell you all your entitlement to benefits based on your circs. Might be worth giving it a go. Its on the Direct Gov website. Will be quicker than waiting on here for replies from people.

Having been a student with an unemployed husband and one child, I can confirm that once your partner goes to uni you are very unlikely to qualify for any housing benefit and certainly won't be more than a few pounds a week. If she is starting a nursing course straight away (ie not doing an access course or something else pre-degree) she should get an NHS bursary anyway (I assume, my sister did but that was several years ago so someone may be able to correct me). You'll still get tax credits while they exist, depending on your overall income.

As far as your course goes, if it's higher education (HND for example) you will be entitled to a loan and grant from the SLC. Again from experience, you can live comfortably on the income from 2 student loans as long as you're not expecting foreign holidays or designer clothes.

You may need to budget for some childcare once your partner starts doing her placements, I don't know if TC contribute towards that. Posting on the student board will get you better replies than on here, especially if you focus on your education plans rather than on complaining about not getting benefits. Whilst I agree that it is ridiculous for the government to put financial barriers in front of people who want to better themselves (and thus, ironically, end up paying higher taxes), a lot of other posters don't and any post which references this ends up being derailed with complaints about spongers, as you can see.

Apologies if anyone's already posted this but student couples are one of the exceptions who can claim benefits, although student loans and grants are used to means test these.

i need a car we live in middle of no where with no public transport i dont expect to be paid for i just want help with living costs while i go to college i would pay it back if they would offer it me in a loan but they wont i plan to go to college and uni to be a paramedic while my partner wants to be a nurse which together would get us a good career happy?

No, you need a bicycle. People without wages should not even think of running a car.

(I am in my mid-50s and have never run a car in the UK, so it is certainly possible. And cycling means I don't need to spend money on Gym memberships either.)

hmm ok i will have to look into the student loan abit more but so far everyone has told me it goes on a credit rating. i appreciate everyone help and input i just hope people do not think i want to sponge off the state i just want my son to have a decent life i want a career so i can provide for him but when there is no jobs out there to put yourself through college etc you do need help off someone you cant live off thin air.

The student loan is for university-level courses, and is not affected by your credit rating. However, you stated that you want to do a two-year course to get yourself ready for university. Student loans are not available for this kind of thing, and banks are unlikely to fund it, even for people with good credit ratings.
