  • has anybody else felt a bit breathless during the early stages? for the last couple of days iv felt like I can't take a big or deep enough breath if that doesn't sound weird. I googled it and apparently it's common in early pregnancy but it's not very nice. I feel like I can't breathe properly so I start panicking and take bigger and bigger breaths and that makes it worse! a bit like when you have a panic attack?! ah the joys :-/

    Congrats Vickyviks!

Im off work sick today :( got a horrible cold and feel really chesty, haven't slept properly. Struggled through yesterday in work and couldn't do it to myself again - am trying not to take anything.

DustyStar - I would be more inclined to take a small baby abroad rather than fly at 36 weeks pregnant.... I had my first child when I was 38 weeks!!Anything can happen...

Thanks for reminder about flu jab Sunshine - I def need to book mine when I am feeling better...

They didn't even take bloods with me when I went for my scan at 9 weeks 6 days - they said they'll do it when I go for a 12 week scan @ 12 weeks 5 days!
  • Just out of interest how much does your hospital charge for scan pictures?

I just phoned our hospital and theres are £3 each

They also said its cash only, so it maybe worth making sure you have cash on you for pictures:)

    Morning Ladies

    Congrats VickyVicks!!! :j :j

I'm joining you in the feeling pants club today. My tummy is just so sore and upset. The nausea really brings you down. :( Hopefully I'll be feeling human again between 1 and 3pm.

I feel quite breathless too FF, when I do even the tiniest bit of exercise. It makes me feel like an old lady! I hope it goes soon, I would like to do some exercise when I get my life back in December :)

Welcome Dusty Star, I was wondering about flying too as I have a conference to go to at 34 weeks. Scary to think we could have our babies then, eek!

Delurking with my input because I just can't stop keeping an eye on some of you! :o I found the first trimester the worst for feeling breathless, I don't know if it's gotten better or if I've gotten used to it but it's not quite as bad now (27w). I can't do much exercise though as I get really breathless and tired very quickly- what a shame that I have to lie on the sofa more than usual! ;)

As for flying late in the pregnancy, as long as you're healthy and the doctor is happy for you to do so it should be OK, but some airlines may refuse if they feel like you may be *too* pregnant so it's best to check their guidelines before booking anything. That said, I wouldn't. I flew at 17 weeks and found it uncomfortable then (that was a 9 hour flight though, short flights would obviously be better), never mind any further along! It's not just things like being bigger, having aches and pains, risk of early labour etc but silly things like what the air pressure will do to you with regards to water retention, you could end up with massive cankles for days afterwards! I know a few people who holidayed in the UK and ended up having their babies whilst on holiday and the logistics of having to then get a newborn back home, after some time in hospital because they've been early, seems like way too much stress for me, never mind being abroad! My last trip away is at 30 weeks and that's only 2 hours away on the train. :)
Overcome the notion that you must be ordinary. It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary!

    Hi All

Boo to all those ladies feeling poorly...I am in that club too. was sick 3 times before even getting out of bed this morning. Bless him my son keeps bringing me his teddy to cuddle to 'make me feel better', i bet he is wondering whats going on. I haven't told him yet as he wouldnt understand and 6-7 months is a lifetime away to a 4 year old to wait for an actual baby to be here.

I'm amazed how much booking appointments vary. I had my first appointment with the midwife at the GP surgery at 9 weeks, did the usual form filling and she checked urine and drained me of blood. She sent my notes off to the hospital to organise my scan and i will have a scan and more bloods (downs test) at the same time. Then more bloods at just after 20 weeks i think she said.

Re scan pics and prices - in my hospital you have to put £ coins into a machine to get tokens that you give to the sonographer to get photos (£3 each) so i will be making sure i take enough money in pound coins.

Welcome to the newly pregnant ladies and congratulations.

Dustystar - very young babies are so portable, we went on holiday when my son was 6 weeks old and we had a great time, just had to be a bit more organised, but he basically ate and slept the whole time. I guess If you book to go when you are 36 weeks you have to be prepared to take the risk to not be able to go for whatever reason.

I am 11+3 today and counting down the days to feeling more human and not constantly sick (i hope). Told OH i'm going on strike soon and he can do it for a bit!!

Oh and another thing about booking in...

I was a bit concerned that my midwife didnt do her own urine pregnancy test before starting the booking in process and taking bloods etc. Surely if someone wanted to make it up (munchausens etc) then that would be a very easy way to get some medical attention with no proof for actually needing it! (obviously they couldnt keep it up for too long though) Or am i just being cynical??
  • Hello everyone :)

I think it varies so widely from area to area. I know at my hospital it is standard to do medical history + bloods + urine at the first midwife (booking in) appointment, because my best friend came with me who had given birth at the same place 7 months before, and she pre-warned me that they would take blood. I don't much like having blood taken (I cry most times becuase I'm a wimp!) but to me I would rather have it taken at every opportunity if it means I feel more reassured that it's an extra opportunity each time to pick up on something that's wrong. My booking appointment literally took 3 hours because they did so much.

Also with the scan photos - at my hospital you get all scan photos for free (in fact we've had two different photos given to us each time as we've had 2 scans so far both before the 12 week mark!)

Instead of having to pay for the photos, there are donation boxes in the waiting room that you can choose to make a donation to if you want whilst you're waiting. My OH says he's going to make a donation at our 12 week scan on Friday, but personally I am of the opposite view....that's what I pay National Insurance for :)
