squirrel I think we'll have the test.
Right now I really couldn't say how we'd react and what we would want do. But even if it would not change anything for you, at least you'd be prepared for it before baby is born.

Hi all, I've been reading your posts, glad things are going well. I've still not got any symptoms really except for big bloated belly, my jeans were too tight yesterday, I had to undo them after a few hours while out and about!

I've only put on a couple of pounds since I've been pg but from August last year to May this yr I had put on 8lbs anyway!

Last July when I was pg I went to the nurse at 5 weeks and she logged my last period and told me my due date and weighed me and a few weeks later I got the maternity exemption card in the post and scan date but by then little bubba had gone to heaven so it was quite painful receiving those in the post. Hopefully this time things will go well!

Going to see the nurse on Tuesday.

Have a good weekend all :)

In my maternity pack it says I will get the mat1 exemption form when I'm 20 weeks. I assume that means ill still have to pay for prescriptions until then??? I thought they were free through all your pregnancy?

I got my Exemption certificate (well, it's a card actually!) last week, so at 11 weeks! :) I don't know if you can get a refund for any prescriptions you have to pay for in between first getting pregnant and receiving the card... check with the pharmacist, surely there must be a way! :) Good news is that once you get the card it is valid until your baby turns 1. :)

ETA: Hang on a minute, there's a difference between the maternity exemption certificate for free prescriptions and the MAT B1 form... you get that one at 20 weeks and that's what you give to your employer to get your maternity leave sorted. :)
Overcome the notion that you must be ordinary. It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary!

Squirrel the Mat1b form is something different from the exemption form- for the card the midwife should have filled it in at your appointment for you but the doctor can do it as well- it
needs their signature and registration number.
It's backdated a month from when it's sent off, so presumably if you say 'i don't need to pay' and they check, by the time they check you'll have a valid certificate/card. must remember to put mine in my purse...

the MAT1B is the 'proof' that you're pregnant to give to your employer for setting up your maternity pay and leave etc

glad you didn't get too much of a lecture - did the mention if you'd have consultant led care? i have to but according to big ladies who've had babies it just means a couple of extra scans to monitor growth - not exactly a hardship! :)

I'm so annoyed! I'm 8 weeks today and rang my GP surgery to find out when the midwife will be contacting me. The receptionist said they don't bother seeing you till after your scan and just wait for a letter in the post with a scan date for between 11 and 14 weeks. So apart from my GP telling me to take supplements I'll be getting no information or advice until possibly 14 weeks! What if I want information on what they'll be looking for in the scan? I have IBS, can I take Imodium? What is the current advice on alcohol, over the counter medications, exercising, etc? It seems that they expect you to be proactive and do your own research on early pregnancy! Is his rubbish service because I live in London?

My husband told me last night that he admires how strong willed I am. Well, half an hour of angry googling gave me a number to self refer for midwifery in South London trust, so I did that. :) Still not happy though as I feel I'm getting sub-standard care compared to wht many of you have said is happening for you. I've not had a single leaflet!

If you ask your gps receptionist they should be able to give you a Bounty pack that has leaflets etc in. It also has leaflets on screening in it. And explains what you can expect.

Please don't panic though, here I have to tell the dr I'm pregnant, then you see the midwife around 8-10 weeks then you have a scan and at the scan they just ask if you want a dating or nuchal scan . They don't really tell you much.

The drs tend to say a blanket no to most medication you will probably find better information online to be honest, I posted some links to drugs websites a couple of pages back, use those.

The advice on alcohol is to drink nothing. Exercising dont do anything unusual for yourself.

I'm lucky in my area you ring up & arrange your scan.

I'd actually rather have the scan before the booking in appt as last time I felt like I'd wasted an entire afternoon doing the booking in appt.

Squirrel I probably won't get the nuchal test because there is no way I would have an amnio so it seems for me it's not worth it as the scan can't tell you. All you'll get is a number. And I know id spend the next 6 months panicking possibly for nothing if it came back higher than normal. If the nuchal scan could tell you for certain then I'd probably do it.

I have been reading this thread for a while now and didnt want to Join as I am cautious and thought I would wait until I am ready and now I am.

Today I am 9 weeks, going to see the midwife on Monday for a scan and checkup. I have not been well recently as monring sickness has been awful and I have not been eating or drinking properly so had to go to hospital last week and be fed with a drip for a week.

I am out now and was ok for a few days but my appetite is still nowhere to be seen apart from Corn crackers and milk porridge

The only thing to remember about having/refusing the Nuchal Fold Test is that it must be done with in a certain timeframe, i believe before 14 weeks.
If you don't want to have it done then you may find that if your area is busy for scans you don't get yours til later on as it's there's no time limit, if you get me.
that's why i went for it- turned out i was booked in early enough that the appointments were available anyway but last pregnancy it was going to be more than 14 weeks before the midwife said i wanted the test so had to be seen before
