I've had a similar issue today with East Midland Trains. While in reality there was not much their customer services team could have done to help me, their attitude was really poor. Instead of pointing me in the direction of the ticket machine which I had not noticed... they adopted the "computer says no" stance which didn't help my fury at paying £60 for a new ticket!

Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.
  • Just stumbled upon this thread and it stood out as it happened to me on Saturday. Drive 20 miles to a Tesco extra to get a new TV, plus week's shopping. Get there and you need £1 for the trolley. Only had CC as it was all going on there. Never thought to take £1 as all my local Tesco's don't charge for trolleys. Just bought the TV in the end and went to Asda on the way back as I was cross!

I got a right wasp in my bonnet about Virgin when I had my purse stolen.

I went to the desk and explained the situation and I had to call my husband for him to book me a ticket via their SILK arrangement. (I thought I was going to end up with a barrister and in court and all sorts) This involved my husband calling their customer service team and booking a ticket over the phone, then their team sending through the authorisation over to New Street Station. It took the porter, who was so kind as their desk people were not interested, he took me a little office where I could make the call in private. It took four hours from start to finish.

Learned my lesson from that, always take two cards and keep separately.

I do see the OP's point. It's not so much she expected them to get her a pound, but the poor service she received.

Waitrose gets around this problem of the £1 issue, by having trolleys with wheels which lock if you attempt to take them out of the boundaries of the supermarket... Imagine the horror...

Trolley nicking is clearly a huge problem. In my area, M&S customers are trusted with trolleys, as are Sainsbury's and Tescos. Asda, Aldi, all have the £1.00 slot. I'd say at a wild guess, it's a class issue. (Along with dreadful customer service of course) Asda and Aldi simply don't trust their customers to return trolleys to their rightful place.

It's not just because of trolley thieves but also those lazy bums who leave their trolleys where they feel like it after they have loaded their car.

Only read the first page, but can't believe the ignorance of the responses OP has received! It's not as if she was expecting pound coins to be handed over as suggested, the trolley porter will have a special key to unlock the trolleys without a coin - people do all sorts to supermarket trolleys including linking different sized ones back to back to get their pound back because they can't be bothered to find a matching line.

    Read it again:
I explained to the trolley attendant and asked if he could help me as i was away to do a big shop. his reply was ' I could but id get in trouble so no' and walked away.

I then went to customer service and explained my situation to her her reply was no cant help and carried on serving others.
At this point i literally didnt no what to do as my food would never fit in a basket and im pregnant so shouldnt really be carrying such a heavy load.

What did she expect these staff members to do? Drop everything and bow down?

Yes, that's bloody irritating, especially when left in a car parking space. Or a rolling one, which is dangerous.

Handy when you haven't got a pound coin or a key fob thingie though... ;):D
  • such a shame to read that happened to you, at my local asda the security guy has a key that unlocks the trolley but gives him the coin back so they don't lose anything and my local tesco's will lend you a charity £1 thing in the faith that you'll return it.

I get how you are feeling though, I had spd in my pregnancy ( and was 36 weeks) but needed a few bits and forgot that my local tesco had changed over so by the time i'd got out of the car and to the trolleys i was already hurting so just went to customer services where the lady told me to go and get some cash out, I actually didn't have £10 on my card so couldn't, which she couldn't understand ( who goes to tesco's with only £9 on their card but it was the end of the month and thats all i had left) she eventually gave me a trolley token but by then i was hurting to much and just left it.
