Flight delay and cancellation compensation, Easyjet ONLY

We were due to fly out of Belfast international last bank holiday and the flight was delayed by around 26 hours. This was initially due to an operational fault with the aircraft. When an alternative plane was found, the flight crew had exceeded their allotted hours and so were unable to fly it to us.
We were booked into a hotel for the night and rather than catch the re-scheduled flight we booked an alternative flight with a competing airline, and cancelled the re-scheduled flight.
Where does this leave us in terms of claiming compensation and/or claiming back the cost of the alternative flights? We've had the initial compensation claim rejected by Easyjet but we have yet to submit receipts for for food and the alternative flights. We also had to miss a days work.
Any advice would be gratefully received.

Our flight from Belfast to Liverpool was delayed by around 26 hours. We've submitted a claim to Easyjet but they have knocked the claim back as we booked an alternative flight with a different carrier, and cancelled out tickets on our original delayed flight.
We were reimbursed the cost of the original tickets. The alternative flights we booked were more expensive. Having read Vauban's guide i'm still a bit unclear as to whether or not they are liable for the cost difference of flights.
Although they have initially rejected the claim, the form we filled out consisted of names of the passengers and the flight number. there was no space to enter further details.
Is this worth pursuing via a formal email/letter or were they right to reject the claim?0 -
What was the reason for the delay?
Generally, unless the delay was caused by extraordinary circumstances, you should be due compensation of €250 per person for the delay, even if you cancelled your flights and rebooked elsewhere. Use the template from Vauban's guide toclaim compensation.If you're new. read The FAQ and Vauban's Guide

We were told there was an operational fault with the aircraft. By the time they has sourced another aircraft, the crew had exceeded their legal permissible airtime so couldn't fly the plane from Liverpool to Belfast to collect us.
Personally I don't think that this qualifies as an extraordinary circumstance.
I'll follow your advice and follow Vauban's guide.

I tried writing to them after a 8.5 hour delay but heard nothing. In the end I went on their website and found the delayed flights section. Search for EU261 on their site. I got a reply within about three days and then got my money back about a week later, no problem at all. You just need the flight details if you still have them? I kept my online booking on email.0
